Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Borland's Delphi or Alpha5 verson 8???

I would like to ask an expert A5 programer to compare the two.
I have been using a5 for 3 years from v6~v8.
My programing partner uses Delphi....he says its better..

Your question may very well open a very heated controversy....

However, I'm inclined to agree with your partner, for reasons too numerous to mention here.

          Re: Borland's Delphi or Alpha5verson8???

You just can't compare apples and oranges.

          Here is your solution:

Design a project on paper. Hand it over to your collegue.
Make it a complex solution if you want.
If you want more pleasure, make it webbased.
Promise your collegue a bottle of champaign if he gets the job done earlier then you can with V8, but BE SURE to ask the same in return.....

Have a nice evening with your champaign......

          Kind regards,

          Marcel

            'Lets assign variables
            Dim Apples as C
            Apples = "Delphi, C#, C++"
            Dim Oranges as C
            Oranges = "Alpha 5"

I understand what a5 is. I've been using it for 3~4 years.

I just don't understand why the documentation of major sql platforms such as Oracle7, mysql, sql server, etc. they all mention Delphi....C++, C#
None of them ever mention Alpha 5.

I fell in love with programing with Alpha5. Originally a math major. I own a cafeteria in the Philippines. I hired a programmer to setup my business. He took off half way through it, and I had no choice but to learn Alpha5(my ex-programmer's legacy) and build my company system. Which is working great. 3 POS + server + management pc. After seeing my system, a friend who owns a garmet facotry (5,000 emp) asked me to setup a system for his company; then another for a call center ( 1,500 emp). So I opened up a software company with me--the sole programmer. I have many more clients already booking with me..my friend Bal with 6,000 employees (furniture manufacturer) also wants an efficient system to manage his inventory and staff payroll accross 8 buildings in 2 compounds....(Wow!)

Do I need to switch to C++...Delphi?

and will continue to program over the coming years with Alpha5. I'm just wondering if I need to switch to Delphi or C# to be a "SERIOUS PROGRAMMER"...if you will.

              Re: Borland's Delphi or Alpha5verson8???

I guess that sort of depends on what you think a "serious programmer" is....

A serious programmer in my opinion is a master on his tools, and knows what tool to use in what circumstances. He knows the strenghts and weaknesses of his tools.

Alpha is a tool. Use it where you need it, use another tool where the other tool is better in place. You are a serious programmer (imho) if you take the right decissions in those matters which could by the way very well result in rejecting the case because you are not the man for the solution.

Alpha is a tool. It is perfectly usable in many circumstances one of them being a situation where you need a database solution FAST. Under those circumstances you can use it as a RAD-Tool, where RAD stands for "Rappid Application Development". This goes particularly for webapplications with easy-to-use security out-of-the-box.

              Kind regards,
              Marcel

                Re: Borland's Delphi or Alpha5verson8???

You can make a lot more with Delphi if you first master it just like c, c++, etc. In fact Alpha is built on c++ if my ,memory serves correctly.

Question, do you want to build something like Alpha or solve a programming solution in a hurry.

Alpha is a fast method to giving needed results that perform with ease and somwhat simply for the end user.

Delphi, c, c++ can go further with add on products(money needed) and will work virtually the same to the end user.

Why bother with the others? 1 Reason maybe: They generate an exe, but that is no big deal either.

                    Re: Borland's Delphi or Alpha5 verson 8???

I've written or co-authored a wide range of fairly intense commercial applications including:

Concurrent PLOT, II - a TSR that ran under DOS to provide interrupt driven background plotting ( 8086 assembler and Turbo Pascal then rewrote in 8086 and C because of size issues)

VideoVelocity - a high speed VGA display list driver for AutoCAD (8086 assembler and C)

Numerous database applications in dBase, Clipper, Visual Basic and Alpha Five

Each language has it's own strengths and it's really a matter of picking the right tool for the job at hand. They are all REAL programming languages and the more you know about each of them the better you'll be at selecting the right tool.

We all have our favorite development environments. A lot of people like Visual Basic. I've ALWAYS hated it compared to Delphi. It's a personal choice.

If you have the time, give Delphi a try because it is a pleasure to learn and to work with.

That said, Alpha Five is one of the best RAD (rapid application develpment) tools I've worked with for database and web database application development. I find the development environment a delight to work with and the workflow makes sense to me. With it's tie in to any of the major SQL database engines, there's a lot of horsepower here and I can produce more in less time with Alpha.

Thank you so much for that answer.
What you said really helps me.....

My main issue at this very moment is that using only mysql tables in the backend and alpha5 (with no tables on it) for the front means that I cannot use the forms to edit the data.......If only alpha could do this!!

Would using alpha5 passive-link tables in a form...and xbasic coding inserts * updates to mysql...then refreshing the form each time.....be a doable approach?

The ability to FULLY tie into SQL databases is huge. It's very hard to really develop an non-web SQL app now. They are about 50% of the way there.
