Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to get computer to save login & password

    OK, this isn't really an A5 problem but does anybody know how to get the browser to prompt the user about saving the login info so they don't have to type it next time? I have some users who don't want to type their name and password every time they log in.

      Cal,

      If this isn't what you are looking for, then I'm guessing that you will need to use cookies to accomplish this task.

          I think you guys are looking in almost the right direction but not quite.

          Users who have passwords being saved for other programs do not get this option on my program. In other words, their browser settings should be correct but it doesn't seem to recognized my fields as something to be saved.

          Do they have to have a specific name or setting of some kind to trigger the browser to save them?

              Re: How to get computer to save login & password

              Passwords are poping in to my Alpha web apps properly (on my pc). I don't think it matters what you name your fields. But it does matter if you changed the name of the field between the time the password was remembered, and now. So, you might delete the rembered Username, close the browser, reopen and try again -- it should then ask if they want to remember the password. If it doesn't ask, then some setting is wrong.

              Here is a reference in case you need to reset something.

                Steve, thanks for the reference but that assumes you have seen the popup at least once for your password. In my case, the popup appears on my users computers for other sites but not for mine.

                If it doesn't matter, then why doesn't it ask to save all fields as passwords? There's got to be something that triggers it to ask to save passwords and not other fields.

                In case it helps, my login and password are just two fields on a regular a5w form. In my case, it doesn't even have any A5 web components on it.

                  Is your password a "password field" or just a normal text field? It needs to be defined specifically as a password field in the dialog.

                    What dialog?

                    Here's my HTML text:
                    Code:
                      <tr>
                        <td align=right><span class=t5>Password:</span></td>
                        <td><input type="password" name="Pswd" value="<%A5 ? Pswd %>" style="WIDTH:22ex">
                      </td></tr>
                    (You don't see me on this message board very often because I virtually never use web components. My two main web customers had demands that I just wasn't able to meet with web components. The primary one being the need to display 500 or more records on one result page. Web components seem to crash somewhere around 100 records - at least they used to.)

                      Re: How to get computer to save login &amp; password

                      Thanks for the code, that clarified things. Here's the answer:

                      You can't create just a password field and have it autocomplete. You can create a text field and have it autocomplete, but a password has to be part of a FORM and have an associated Username field in that form. (Based on observeration, not empirical knowledge). Go find some html from a page where the password is remembered, and use that as a model. You can fake the Username requirement, it can always be the same value for them.

                        Re: How to get computer to save login &amp; password

                        Thanks for spending time answering this Steve.

                        This is in a form. The beginning of the form and table (immediately before the previous code) is:
                        Code:
                        <table align=center>
                        <form action="<%A5 ? Request.script_name %>" method=post>
                          <tr>
                            <td align=right><span class=t5>Login Number:</span></td>
                            <td><input type="text" name="Login_name" value="<%a5 ? Login_name %>" style="WIDTH:22ex">
                          </td></tr>
                          ... the next row of the table is what what shown previously ...
                        Are you saying that changing this name="Login_name" to name="Username" may be enough to solve the problem?

                        (If you're wondering why the value of Login_name is set to a variable, there are certain situations where the user may come back to this page with the login name already set. One is when they go to the 'register' page. After their initial registration the login_name is saved and automatically entered into the field when they return.)

                        BTW, I took a look at some source code of login pages but (a) some also used tons of JavaScript, (b) not all have a 'username' field, and (c) some set an autocomplete value (on/off). Mostly this exercise just created more confusion. In one page that did ask to save the password, the name of the User Name field was name="IDToken1" and the name of the password field was name="IDToken2" yet IE still asked to save the password.

                          Guess I'd have to see the page in action. Your snippit does not include the rest of the form.
