Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Desktop vs Web App

I'm running the desktop version right now, v7, and was just informed my company would like to expand to maybe 3 or 4 more consoles running this database. What is going to take to make Alpha accessible through an intranet and can this be done with desktop versions or do I need to purchase the Web-App Server program. If the Web-App is the only way to multi-user my database, how difficult is it to convert a desktop designed database into a web-based (or any other variation) version of the database? This is something I didn't know where else to ask so I figured you guys would have something for me to run with...thank you for all you're help
    :)

Can I run both a desktop, or two desktops and also a Web-based app which all control the same database?

Provided those consoles are in the same vicinity, like an office, for what you are describing you don't need to build a web application. Go to Alpha's website and get familiar with the "Runtime" module. This lets you make your Alpha application multi-user over a LAN. Converting to a web application is a complete re-write of the application and a significant amount of work.

Ah so Runtime will make an application mobile, completely registered? Is that how you create and sell a program? Very noobile question, but I was confused when I originally purchased Alpha over the phone. I will call them today and clarify. I would rather have all desktop versions and then simply connect them using a server, complete intranet, but accessing the same database at once....this is simply a matter of getting the runtime? Thank you Steve.

Basically, yes. Strictly speaking, you could buy a 5-user full version w/o the RT and use it w. 5 people and be "registered". However, you would probably only do that if you had 5 developers as verses 5 users.

Is that how you create and sell a program?
RT is how you would sell the program to others. But you need the full version to create your application first.

Again, RT is what one would typically use, but a multi-user license of the full version would also work.

Thank you Peter for responding, you solved my problem as far as buy the newer version and which to buy...We will want to create many different programs all independant of themselves so the RT with 5-user license is the most likely candidate...thank you again.

Be sure 5 users is enough. It may be less expensive in the long run to have more users. I bought 20 user runtime on v7 thinking it would be overkill and first shot I sold was 16 users.

A point to keep in mind regarding a Runtime is that the number (3 user RT, 5 user RT, etc.) refers to the number of concurrent users, NOT the number of systems on which the database is installed. In simple terms, you have a 5 user RT installed at a client's location and there are more than five people who will be using the system. The limitation is that there can only be five users at any one time.
