Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Help with a Filter

    Peter, Thank you for taking the time to look at this for me. The fields now work independently of eachother, but im really sorry to say that they do not also work together.

    For instance you can look up Desktop or Charity, but not the records for Desktop and Charity only.

    What do you think?

    Thanks again Peter.

      Re: Help with a Filter

      In the data I returned to you I placed a blank record in each, this is so the dropdown opens with nothing, do that then it will work.

        Re: Help with a Filter

        Peter,

        Thanks again. I tested the code after a restart of Alpha (got to do that sometimes), and the Type and DSR fields work as they should. Fantastic, and the dreaded but... if you say choose

        CHARITY
        DESKTOP
        01/07/07
        31/07/07

        You get all items with charity and all items with desktops between the specified date. This only happens when you use dates with the Type & DSR fields.

        I tried replacing the .or. with .and. and it worked, but caused the other fields (vType VDSR) not to work together.

          Re: Help with a Filter

          paste this in where your filter is. Take a look at it and you will see how it works and set you in the right direction.

          Code:
          if VDsr <> "" .and. VType <> "" then
          Filter = "(Dsr = \""+VDsr+"\"  )  .and. (Type = \""+VType+"\"  ) .and. (between(Date,ctod(\""+convert_type(VFromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+convert_type(VToDate,"C")+"\")) )"
          end if

          if VDsr = "" .or. VType = "" then
          Filter = "(Dsr = \""+VDsr+"\"  )  .or. (Type = \""+VType+"\"  ) .and. (between(Date,ctod(\""+convert_type(VFromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+convert_type(VToDate,"C")+"\")) )"
          Order = "Dsr+cdate(Date)+Type"
          end if

            Peter,

            Thank you for your perseverance.

            We have success!!!!

            The final code syntax is show below.

            Code:
            if vDSR <> "" .and. vType = "" then
                Filter = "(Dsr = \""+vDsr+"\"  ) .and. (between(Date_disp_cert,ctod(\""+convert_type(vFromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+convert_type(vToDate,"C")+"\")) )"
            end if

            if vDSR = "" .and. vType <> "" then
            	Filter = "(type = \""+vType+"\"  ) .and. (between(Date_disp_cert,ctod(\""+convert_type(vFromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+convert_type(vToDate,"C")+"\")) )"
            end if

            if vDSR = "" .and. vType = "" then vDSR = "*" .and. vType = "*" 'if blank then put * in place
            	Filter = "between(Date_disp_cert,ctod(\""+convert_type(vfromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+vToDate+"\"))"
            end if

            if vDSR <> "" .and. vType <> "" then
                Filter = "(Dsr = \""+vDsr+"\"  )  .and. (Type = \""+vType+"\"  ) .and. (between(Date_disp_cert,ctod(\""+convert_type(vFromDate,"C")+"\"),ctod(\""+convert_type(vToDate,"C")+"\")) )"

              Well done. It's a very important thing to understand.
              Cheers, Peter.

                Re: Help with a Filter

                Sorry for not getting back to you. This thread has certainly moved on since I last looked at it!

                I know it's working, and I hate to mess with success, but I have a few suggestions.

                First, you might want to reconsider using blank as the selection for all. To the user, that could indicate none rather than all. So, if your dropdown is static, then you could put "All" as the first entry. Then, if someone doesn't touch it, that's the default. If your dropdown is dynamic, then put "All" as the additional pre choice so it shows first and defaults to that value.

                Second, you say your fields are:

                vDSR = Dropdown (Single select)
                vType = Dropdown (Single Select)
                fromDate = Textbox with Calendar icon
                toDate = Textbox with Calendar icon

                So, you should reference them by their control value, not the variable. So your script could be:

                Code:

                vD=alltrim(Currentform.Controls.vDSR.value)
                vT=alltrim(Currentform.Controls.vType.value)
                vFDt=alltrim(Currentform.Controls.fromDate.value)
                vTDt=alltrim(Currentform.Controls.toDate.value)

                if vD="All"
                filter=.t.
                else
                filter="DSR="+quote(vD)
                end if

                if vT="All"
                filter=filter
                else
                filter=filter+".and. Type ="+quote(vT)
                end if

                filter=filter+".and.between(Date_disp_cert,ctod(vFDt),ctod(vTdt))

                  Pat, that's a great suggestion, and I'm certain now that how it all works is a little clearer, Denis will be able to improve the functions available to users.
