Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Web Component

Make it Hidden instead of Lablel. But since you also want to see the value in the grid, create a calculated field that shows the value.

Example: you want to show BrandID, but not allow edit.

Include the BrandID in your Selected list, but make it Hidden AND check Hide Column.

Then make a Calculated field named vBrandID. Make it vBrandID = Brand_ID
(assuming your field is named Brand_ID).

Now show that field in your Selected list as a Label where you want the Brand ID to show up.

      Hi Steve

thanks for you reply. The records are label in the grid. User cannot change it.

      The Detail View is updatable.

The problem is how to prevent the BrandID unable to edit.

If I put the BrandID as Label - my script in the caninsert cannot run, due to cannot find the brandid.

If I put the BrandID as Hidded - my script in the canupdate cannot run, due to cannot find the brandid.

      Please advice further...
      Many Thanks.

That/s not true about Hidden. The field value will still be available if the field is hidden. Something else is not working.

            Re: Web Component

Well, its basically all wrong. But its 3AM, and I have to hit it in the morning. But first of all, you are linking between Grid and Detail on Category and then allowing the field Category to be changed in the Detail section. Can't do that. The linking field should be Cat_ID.

Second, you have some fancy increment function in the CanAdd event. Not necessary; you should make that field an autoincrement in the table FIELD RULES and then get rid of that code. And make all of your ID field CHARACTER, not numeric. I know that sounds off, but its well documented on this forum. That will also start off your first record as 1 not 0.

I'll get to it later, unelss someone else jump in, but there is no need for the tbl = table.open methodology you have in the events. The database is already open, and you are pointing to the current record.

              Re: Web Component

              Hi Steve

Thanks for your highlight to me..

I have changed the Category ID as Character and rebuild the web components.

Please see the attached file. Now I enter the same record of A, it still accept it after I put the code the code at caninsertrecord and canupdaterecord:

              IF exist(quote(DataSubmitted.CATEGORY),"category","Category") then
              Result.Cancel = .t.
              Result.ErrorHTML = "Record already exists"
              exit function
              END IF

When I enter "A" into the Category, it seems the code not running, and still save the duplicate record. Please advice whether

Next, I have change the CategoryID as Character and start with "1".

You try to delete all the record at the detail view, and add a new record, the record start from "0000000" instead of 1. Does it means I need to pack the table?

              Please advice..... Many thanks.
              Many Thanks.
