Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Interrupting a loop in a script

    If you were to create an infinite loop, is there any way to interrupt it with any key on the keyboard. I've tried various things, but I can't seem to get it to stop the script. Any ideas?

    Thinking back too many years hurts my brain, but won't [CTRL]-[BREAK] do what you want?

      Dave,
      Sounds good... where is the Break key?

      Dave... I found it! I'm going to give this a try now that I know about this and have several infinite loop sequences I have created. Thanks for the insight!

        While that may work, I am looking for a more user-friendly solution. I have a few users that are uhh.......let's just say not good with computers :p Thanks anyways though. I'll probably just end up doing that.

          Nick,
          By "user friendly" if you are referring to perhaps having a button on a form then do just that by scripting sys_send_keys({^BREAK}) or use Action Scripting: left menu choose "Miscellaneous", right menu choose "Send Keys" and then check the record box and press control--break.

            Mike,

            Nick is using Alpha Four V7, so your solution, while a good one, won't work as you offered, BUT he could write a script (the old fashioned way) to do what you suggest.

            I wasn't thinking of a script, just how to break the infinite loop.

              Would you mind offering some details about what the script would entail? Essentially I have this:

              Code:
              {SET %Counter, 1000}
              {:A}

              {TONE 850, 175}
              {TONE 0, 175}
              {LOOP :A, %Counter}
              and I want to be able to have a screen that has a button, so when you press it, or hit enter, it'll stop the loop.

                :o My apologies! Actually one of the few times I did not look at the version of the question and of course it's one I submit an answer to!!

                Now that I gave a possibility hopefully someone will come along to help with the script--If I could I would.

                  Mike,

                  No problem - I wish I had a nickel for each time I've answered something without noting whether I was in A4 or A5.

                  Nick,

                  Keep in mind that I haven't messed with A4 for quite a while, so I might be a bit rusty on this.

                  Tap [ALT]-[F3] bring up the script editor. Create a keystroke script with {ABORT} as the only command in it. Save it with a name like KillLoop (you are limited to eight letters in the name). Then, tap [ALT]-[B] and the Button dialog will appear. On the first line enter the text to appear on the button (I used Abort). On the second line, tap [F2] and select the script you previously created (KillLoop in my example). Then save what you've done, save the form and you should be ready to go.

                  Let me know if this works.

                    Dave,

                    While that works as a dialog script, I can't seem to find a way to integrate it. As far as I can see, only one script can run at a time. I put the dialog script at the beginning of the loop script, and the loop script waits for the dialog script to complete before executing. However, it's still early :p

                      Nick,

                      Alpha 4 is single threaded. You can either terminate the Alpha 4 windows, try the Ctrl-Break (which does not stop all scripts), or, for testing purposes, put a piece of code in your script to test for the existence of a file, and if it does exist, abort the script.

                      Then create (or copy a file) to where the script is looking, and it will stop. Of course, this assumes you have put the file test in the place that it is stuck in the loop
                      Regards,

                        Interestingly enough, I put a request ("wish list") for the message board to display what version the thread relates to in the thread itself. Selwyn said he would look into it.
