Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copying database structure/forms/operations

    Rookie Question

Several months ago I created a database from a csv file and designed a number of 'forms' and 'operations' (saved imports, sorts, selects, etc). It took me a long time to get it all setup the way I wanted it. I now need to save that database exactly as it is, recreate the structure of the db, and then import a new csv datafile I have received and copy the old db's forms and operations so I don't have to reinvent the world.

How the heck to I recreate the identical database structure in the new directory and import the forms and operations? I've tried using the help file copying of files idea but the new structure always seems to end up with the old data in it. Grrrr. Can you help?

    Thanks

    Alex,

Several ways to accomplish what I think you want.

It sounds like you got to the point of duplicating your database including your old data--if so then simply empty all the tables of data (right click on a table in the control panel and choose Utilities-->Empty Tables.....then import your new files.

Or if you have this automated and want the tables emptied use the Table.zap() function in a loop that runs through all your tables. Then import your new files.

Or zip up your database with all but the dbf files (data) , rename the database (not absolutely necessary I guess) to something else and place into a different directory. Then import your new files.

Other ways are possible too--if your situation is that you have a current database and need to import operations, forms etc., then much more work is involved.

      Re: Copying database structure/forms/operations

Thanks for the fast reply Mike.

I made the mistake of naming the original database I created non-generically (e.g. CA-Cosmos-Feb-07) so all the files for the DB have that name. The new data should be identified as CA-Cosmos-Jun-07.

When I tried straight copying over it always used the old filenames.

What I am doing is creating a new database from the more current data in June.

Can I simply rename everything using Explorer to something generic in the new directory and have that work?

        Re: Copying database structure/forms/operations

        Alex,

I have only had to do this a couple of times but just did for the heck of it--All I had to do was to rename all the files in the database folder with the current database name (.adb, .alb, .alm, etc.) to whatever I wanted (with Explorer). I also had to then delete the library with the same name as it kept reproducing the old alb, alm, and alx database prefixes. Once done the database was then referred to by the new name. The library is accessed via: File-->Database Properties-->Libraries tab or Compliled Libraries tab.

As in ALL things to try---BACKUP first before making such a change!!! :-)

          Alex,

I was going to point you to this help page that deals with this but Mike did a good job of saying whats on that page. I found it by typing database in the index and then scrolling through the sub items.

On another note if the new data has the same structure but is just for a different date range the usual thing to do is to keep it all in one database and apply filters to see the date range you want.

Wonderful gents. Thank you very much!! I will be playing around with it now. I believe you have solved my dilemma. The library was the kicker. Something was written down by the program somewhere that kept drawing in the old data and I had no idea where to look.

              Re: Copying database structure/forms/operations

Oh Tim. I forgot to answer your point about filtering. Not appropriate for this situation. It is a database list of a certain licensee we get from the State of California. I buy it every quarter for the last three months of new licenses but I like having the entire list availabe. It's only the most recent ones I want and they of course are not in the older database.

              Thanks for your kind help.
