Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid with fields from several tables, including a record count field

Although this is the first (second?) time I am writting here, I have been reading the forum from a lot of time ago.
First, excuse me for my very bad written english as I am spanish. I can read in english better than write.
I have been developing programs for more than 20 years. First in Basic, Cobol and when dbase appeared, in Clipper, then in VBasic finally in Access.
After stop programming for the last ten years, I have decided to start again, but need a new RAD developing tool like Alpha. I choosed Alpha betwen Runtime Revolution, WinDev (very good but very expensive), Foxpro, Omnis a others.
I have a license of the enterprese edition and what I need at the moment is a desktop program for my customer (he is my best friend).

This is a program to control liferafts inspections and I works with 3 different related tables:

    - Ship owners
    - Ships
    - Liferafts

The relation between tables are 'one to many' in all cases (one ship owner can have several ships, one ship can have several liferafts)

For the first instance I need a grid with the following info:
Ship's name - Ship's owner - number of liferafts in the ship

The grid should be in a tabbed object with 3 tabs. When clicking in the second tab should show the complete list (grid or list-box) of liferafts (relevant info) in the selected vessel in the first tab. When clicking in the third tab, should show all the info of the selected liferaft.

I can do that using an SQL statement, working with Alpha Five using external link tables (in Access), but I don't know how to construct that with Alpha.

    Any help? Thanks in advance

    Jose

    Hola Jose,

Probably the best and quickest way to do this is to reate a new form in the Forms tab of the Control Panel. Select the set and then click Next, Next, Next, etc. and let the Genie do it for you.

Not sure if you know how to create a set but that is done in the Tables/Sets tab of the control panel.

I didn't go into a lot of detail because for right now, examining how the Genie does it is better than me taking a bunch of space to describe it.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Jose,

To expand on Kenn's comments a bit ...

Recommend you create a set with Ship_owners primary, Ships as child - linked 1 to many, and LifeRafts as grandchild - linked 1 to many. Begin by going to the Alpha Five control panel, select tables / sets tab and right click white space, then choose "New Set".

Base your form on the new set.

In Alpha Five desktop applications a "grid" is called an embedded browse or browse object. Once your tab control is on the set based form put a browse on tab1 and bind it to the parent table. Put a second browse on tab2 and bind it to the child table. Put a 3rd browse on tab3 and bind it to the grandchild.
