Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Secure connection to mySQL database

    Hi folks

I'm a relative newbie to A5v8. I want to make a secure connection to an online mySQL database, so that I can import customer orders into a local A5v8 (Enterprise version) database for subsequent processing. The information will contain payment details, so security needs to be tip-top.

I'm assuming lots of you do this regularly. I'd much appreciate a general overview of the best way to implement it, and am happy to pay for the advice on an ongoing basis.

A colleague whom I consider to be knowledgeable warned me off attempting this, citing instances of mySQL crashes and corruption due to directly accessing the mySQL at the same time as customers doing the same. Any views on that?

    TIA
    Paul

Re: Secure connection to mySQL database

I'm not sure what kind of advice/response you'll get with such a general question. But if you have specifics....

I run a couple of secure connections (in one instance the source provider even limits activity by IP address) with no apparent problems.

Don't forget to use the Search feature on this board -- you might find some good general advice, etc. and check the "related links" at the bottom of this page.

      mySQL and security

Does anyone know how to connect A5v8 to a web-hosted mySQL database in a secure manner, so that I can use passive link tables to retrieve the data from the mySQL?
I've successfully connected and the links work, but I need to secure the connection, but the standard mySQL port 3306 is not secure, and as far as I can see mySQL doesn't have a secure port facility.
I considered using SSH somehow but that seems a tad messy, I was hoping to do it all from within A5...any suggestions please?

        Re: mySQL and security

Your best bet is to connect to MySQL using ODBC and set up the secure connection at the DSN level. So, you would use the ODBC driver and MySQL Syntax when you define your AlphaDAO connection string. We are working on supporting secure/encrypted MySQL direct connections, but it's not available at this time.

          Thanks, Aaron.
You say you're working on supporting secure mySQL connections - should I hold my breath for a few days/weeks or is it more likely to be a version 9 feature? Knowing would help me decide which route to take...

I don't think that it will be available immediately.

Re: Secure connection to mySQL database

Here's some documentation that might help. You basically need to install MyODBC on the client machine. It should be configurable in the dialog somewhere.

I've already installed MyODBC on the machine and have created a successful connection (non-secure) to the remote database, but I just can't see how to make the connection secure at DSN level. Aaron, the mySQL documentation you pointed me to is quite technical and pretty incomprehensible to me. I see references to SSL certs etc in the myODBC docs, but it doesn't look like "Alpha 5 beginners" material. I just need a little hand-holding - any takers out there with a little time to spare please?
