Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to report a bug/problem?

Can anyone tell me how I go about reporting a bug in Alpha Five Ver 8?

    I have the following problem:

Reports produced in previous versions of Alpha 5 which were working fine in Alpha five ver 8 are now formatted incorrectly (since applying todays Alpha 5 v 8 update - full patch).

They seem to be filled with extra spaces! Has anyone else noticed this??

See attachments. Quality has had to be reduced due to file size limit.

    Thanks,

    Alastair

I think it is a bug related to RTFs. I forget what setting triggers it. I never bothered reporting the bug because I figured out some kind of work around.

      Peter,

When did you first notice this problem? I have only just experienced this and these reports have been used for two to three years now. I thought this may be due to downloading todays updates, not sure after what you have said, can you remember how you got around this as I need to get this working ASAP!

      Thanks,

      Alastair

Well, the problem I experience has been since ver. 8. Maybe yours is a variation of it?

O.K. I am not sure but I would like to report this as a bug so someone can take a look at this - any idea how I go about doing this?

Re: How to report a bug/problem?

There is a choice on the Help menu to submit a bug report. It is always best to zip up your database and attach that to the bug report.

I have passed this onto Alpha Software to have a look at, does anyone else have this problem or have a workaround for it?

Re: How to report a bug/problem?

For anyone having similar problems I have found out what was causing this!

After 3-4 hours looking into and taking Peters suggestion about RTF causing his problems I discovered that the top of my reports had grouped items some containing RTF. I tried ungrouping them and the extra spaces have now disappeared.

Can any Alpha Five developers tell me what was changed in the latest patch that has caused these grouped items to do this? Or can anyone else offer a solution?

Re: How to report a bug/problem?

I have several reports and letters that have been affected the same way. I have up to five years developed into many of these reports and letters. I have no intention of changing my developments. I sure hope Alpha fixes this bug, otherwise I will not be doing anymore updates.

I reported this bug a few days ago, does anyone know how long it normally takes to receive a response?

                        Alastair,

I also noticed this problem and Selwyn gave me the same fix you mentioned a few posts ago ("ungroup the fields"). They are able to reproduce the bug so at least we know they're working on it. In the mean time I've just ungrouped fields in problem reports.

FYI, new beta build has this fix in the release notes.
