Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    tab delimited string to table

I searched the forums, and I looked through the documentation, but I could not find the way to take a reasonably short, tab delimited string of field data (with CRLF for each record) and quickly put it into a dbf table, either new or existing. If it were comma delimited I see a way [.populate_from_string()], but not tab delimited. Please note, I am not talking about importing a tab delimited text file, just a string.

I actually solved the problem that raised this question by going down a different route, but I am just curious--is there a simple function I could not find that takes care of this?

Does the string itself contain commas?

    If not, why not

    <TBL>.POPULATE_FROM_STRING( Record_Format as C, Record_Separator as C, Stritran(Data as C,chr(9),",") )
    There can be only one.

      Code:
      dim tablist as C
      dim commalist as C
      tablist="1    2    3"
      commalist=stritran(tablist,chr(9),",")

        Al,

You have to become one with the board, feel its ebbs and flows, let it into you and become part of it................

            Stan and Al,

Unfortunately, the string itself contains commas. I should have mentioned that in the original post.

Any other ideas? Like I said, I have gotten around this by going in a different direction, so it's not like I am stuck. It just seems like there ought to be an easy way to do it and so far I have not been able to come up with it.

You are dealing with an abnormal situation as of course you realize. Without knowing the content of the data one can only suggest that if you can live with the "corruption" you could convert the spurious commas to some other character (; ?) and then convert the tabs to commas.
              Code:
              <TBL>.POPULATE_FROM_STRING( Record_Format as C, Record_Separator as C, Stritran(Stritran(Data as C,",",";"),chr(9),",") )
Otherwise I'd stick with your present solution.

.POPULATE_FROM_STRING() seems to be a high level wrapper for some fairly simple code.

              You could always put
              Code:
              <TBL>.POPULATE_FROM_WIERD_STRING( Record_Format as C, Record_Separator as C, Field_Separator as C, Data as C )
              in the wishlist area.
              There can be only one.

Re: tab delimited string to table

                Stan,

Thanks. I just thought there might be some function I was overlooking. What I needed to do was get a SQL query result variable (which is a tab delimited string) into a table. My first thought was .populate_from String(). However, since that does not do the job I moved on to SQL::ResultSet::ToDBF() which seems to do what I need. A minor issue with SQL::ResultSet::ToDBF() is that the overwrite option ("Whether to overwrite the existing data.") seems backwards to me (.F. overwrites). I have reported this as a possible bug, though possibly it is my thinking that is backwards. It wouldn't be the first time!

Re: tab delimited string to table

This is definitely backwards. When the argument is described in the help as "Optional. Whether to overwrite the existing data." 'True' would seem the logical choice here to overwrite the data.
I'm glad I found this as I was chasing all kinds of red herrings because of this. Even a definition of True/False in the help would have answered this.

                  I'm done whining now.
