Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Vista (in)compatibility with version 5

I know there are other threads about this, but I cannot get v5 to work at all under Vista.

Does v 5 actually run under Vista?

When I click the a5v5 icon from desktop, I get 2 errors:

    SmartHeap Library - mem_bad pointer

    and then:

SmartHeap Library - SmartHeap error handler recursively re-entered

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated ...

    Gary,

In spite of many other's attempts, I think the general consensus is that A5V8 is the only Alpha version that will run under Vista. If someone has found otherwise, I'm sure they'll pipe up!

      Gary and Bob,

I just posted that I have installed a v7 runtime on a virgin system and have been testing it for over three weeks. I have found NO errors so far. You may want to read my other post as of today.

I installed with astrum and NO part of the application was ever in program files and is not in program files now. This is just a test as I already purchased v8. AStrum was used to set up the registry also.

This does not mean I will not find errors and does not mean v5 will work. I have not tried to use v7 in vista to develope.

        Dave,

Is there a way that you know of to avoid the error messages that I mentioned above (or, where are your other posts??)

          Gary,

I have not had those messages.

I installed to v7 runtime only to a VIRGIN(never had alpha before) computer using astrum installer. The whole program and my app installed into ups55 and the data installed into ups55s so I could later use the data in ups55s $in a server configuration.

I have a feeling that if v7 had been installed normally before, it would have tried to find files in program files. I did not want that. At least I think I am right.

I would have tried this a long time ago but for lack of Vista.

You may(Idon't know) have to redo it to a virgin computer.

Re: Vista (in)compatibility with version 5

I have been considering my options for A5 since upgrading to a laptop with Vista. It seems like I may be able to install A5v7 on Vista and use it. But I am wondering what some of the risks might be. For instance, can I be sure that my data files will not get corrupted? I can work around problems with designing forms and reports but I must be sure the data tables are not messed up. Is there a risk to my data if I use v7 on Vista instead of upgrading to v8?

            Thanks,
            Sean

Re: Vista (in)compatibility with version 5

I cannot answer that. Alpha says it is unstable to use anything but version 8 on vista. That may be true, but I have run test data every which way I can think of with V7 that would be normal and a little abnormal for my apps and have had no mess ups. Appends and so forth have worked great.

I would strongly suggest (if you intend to use anything but V8) a lot of testing all through your app. There may be something I didn't hit that could mess you up. In other words test for what you do now and then anything you think you might do later.

It seems quicker and stronger to me.

Re: Vista (in)compatibility with version 5

                Update.

In trying to install V7 on a vista laptop and updating the registry with my own settings, it failed. I went into registry and deleted the reg entry for alpha and it worked just great.

Another note: I had been running in the compatibility mode for win 2000 or xp. I got rid of the compatibility mode and the speed increased 10 fold or more.

I still caution anyone about v7 and Vista, but 2 months seems a good test with data being entered processed and printed every day. Remember, I just print to the default printer or let the user check which he wants. Not doing pdf's and stuff like that.

Re: Vista (in)compatibility with version 5

I'll probably just buy v8 for this Vista laptop. I don't have the time for extensive testing and can't chance data corruption. v7 will probably work but it's just easier for me to get the new software.

                  Thanks for your input.
