Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Button to create new records, behaving oddly

I have a form button that creates a new record at the top level of the active set, then several more child records. At times the form is overwriting some of the child record values. I can observe the behavior like so:

    1. Open default browse for the child in the background.
    2. Start change mode in the embedded browse, leave one column changed but unsaved.
    3. Use button to create new rows.

At this point, everything looks fine. The new child rows have all the correct values in both the form and the browse.

    4. Navigate to previous parent record.
    5. View default browse, see that one of the child rows has been modified.

It's almost like the change that was started in Record 1 before the button was hit is applied to Record 2 as I navigate away from the record.

I'm creating these records referencing table.current(n) for tables 1-4 in the set, then using enter_begin() and change_begin() as necessary. There must be some step I'm missing: a commit, an incorrect reference, something I hadn't even thought to consider. Any help would be appreciated.

I can probably provide a sample of the database tomorrow, but I thought someone out there might see a problem with my approach.

    Thank you.

Sounds like a timing issue to me. Post a sample of your database with directions to the form in question.

Sample database attached. To replicate the problem:
      1. Run script "Database_Init" to reset tables.
      2. Open form "Packing_List_QC"
      3. Press button "New Packing List."
      4. Enter order number 65000 and click "OK." Embedded browse will populate. Note that all the values across the rows are equal (150, 10, 35).
      5. Select one of the values in the "To Ship" column and delete. Do not save the record ("F9").
      6. Press "New Packing List" a second time.
      7. Enter order number 65000 again. Note that the values are again correct (150, 10, 35).
      8. Navigate to the previous top-level record (Page Up, or the toolbar button).
      9. Navigate to the next record (created in step 7).

Mess around a bit and the problem should show itself. Change some values and navigate the records and you should see the bug I'm experiencing. I can delete all the "To Ship" values for a record set, page up to the start, page down to the end, and see that one of my "To Ship" values has been filled back in.

I like to keep the default browse for pl_detail.dbf open so I can switch back to it and see all the records that changed as I navigated the set.

The problem seems to go away if I remove the form's OnFetch handler.

I was able to isolate the problem down to setting the field.readonly property on an embedded browse column object. I've submitted the bug report and it's been observed on the Alpha Software side of things.
