Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to make this code work?

    I don't know what am I doing wrong.
    I attached this code to the button 'ONCHANGE' event:
    tbl=table.open("names")
    tbl.index_primary_put("name")
    tbl.fetch_find(var->namevar)
    var->foundname=tbl.Name
    tbl.close()

    and it is working, but not on the way I wanted.
    Well, I want as soon as I push the button (for example letter 'a') that above code to be activated so I find the first name in tbl names which begin with letter a.
    I tried to put this code in a form event 'ONKEY' but it doesn't work there (for some reason).
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

    I don't think that 'buttons' have an OnChange Event.....

    Double check, and try to be more specific about exactly what you are doing and what is being displayed.....

    If you can, try to zip up a copy of the database and put it on the board so someone can help you.

      Your code looks ok to me. Put it in the button's OnPush event.

        Change to:
        tbl=table.open("names")
        tbl.index_primary_put("name")
        tbl.fetch_find(left(var->namevar,1)
        foundname=tbl.Name
        tbl.close()

          If the letter 'a' is a "button" perhaps Zeljko is trying to build a progressive lookup? While calling a keystroke a button is odd perhaps there's a language barrier at work here.

          Another guess would be maybe he's trying to define a multi-state button and the button happens to be labelled "a".

          Hopefully he'll explain further.

            Tom:
            If the letter 'a' is a "button" perhaps Zeljko is trying to build a progressive lookup?
            That question came to mind on first reading this thread, and I assumed that he has 28 buttons each with a letter from a to z but I dismissed it as a means for progressive lookup because tbl.fetch_find() will only bring the FIRST matching record.

            I agree, further clarification is in order.

              Re: How to make this code work?

              Thanks for reply guys.
              Actually, I've been trying to make following:
              - I have names stored in a table called 'names'.
              - On a form I have a field1 where I'm searching by the code number of a name and field2 where I can search by name
              - The code numbers goes like 1, 2, 3, 4......
              - I have attached the mentioned code on the field event 'OnChange', so when I enter 1 and press enter, in the field2 name1 appears.
              I was thinking to make as soon as I press 1 that name1 appear in the field2 without pressing enter.
              If I have code number(or names ID) 5 digits long, then it would be nice if I can make pointer to point to the first closest match.
              Hope its clear now.
              Thanks in advance for help.
