Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

changing a many to many relationship

Sorry in advance for the verbose explanation but I don't know how else to explain things.
I'm sure there is a simple solution and I just cannot see it.

The database is designed to track information about turtles nests and the hatching of the eggs and figure averages of eggs per nest, survival rates, tempurature of the nests, tides, weather, moon phases etc. over time.
There is about 12 years of data that will be imported at some point from the XLS files where it is now being tracked.

The many to many relation ship I'm having a problem with is this:
A turtle lays a nest in a beach. These eggs are removed from the beach and taken to a nursery where they are placed in incubators.

The incubators hold 120 average sized eggs.
Each nests will have between and 45 and 150 eggs per nest, with anaverage of 100 eggs.
To maximize the use of space in the nursery and incubators the nests are combined to fill each incubator.

So far so good.(one incubator / multiple nests.)

The problem arises when there are more eggs in a nest, say 138 than will fit in the incubator. (one nest / multiple incubators.)

Once the eggs hatch, the incubators are cleaned and the live hatchlings, dead hatchlings that are inside as well as outside the shell and the empty shells are counted.

This is to correlate the number of nests and eggs to calculate the averages for:
    1- eggs per nest
2- number of live hatchlings released
3- number of hatchlings dead in the incubator/nest but not in the shell
4- number of hatchlings dead but still in the shell
5- number of sterile / unformed
    6- number of shells
    7- survival rate.

    any assistance will be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Dirk

    Dirk,

No need to apologize for giving too much relevant information. You may, however, get better assistance if you ask a specific question. Here is a link to another post about many to many with an example that may help.

Re: changing a many to many relationship

I read the post you mentioned. Thank you. Great information. I also did some additional research on changing m:m relationships. their are certainly several ways to approach it.
      I liked your approach.
The approach i am trying, is to combine the Primary key of each of the m:m tables to create the primary for the linking table.
      thanks for your assistance.
