Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What is the "Destop Server"?

I notice on the update downloads page that there is
Alpha Five Application Server update - this is obvious
Alpha Five Desktop Server update - not sure what this is
Alpha Five update - this is obvious

Does the Alpha Five Update not update the web side of the product, and is that what the Desktop Server update is for? I do not see any version info displayed for the web side of the desktop product.

    Bill.

      Desktop Server?

On the 'Alpha Software Products' page, there are descriptions of the the Basic and Enterprise versions of the WAS ($399 and $699 respectively). However, if you click on 'Application Server' under Products in the list on the left, and then click the Alpha Five Application Server dropdown on the next page, there is a third version - Desktop Server with a price of $599.

Does anyone have any hint(s) about this version of the WAS server?

Re: What is the "Destop Server"?

Peter poses a valid question. I checked out the Alpha Store. You can't purchase/download the Alpha 5 Desktop Server, but as Peter points out, you can download a patch for it (I just tried, it's 24.5MB of update). I didn't have nerve enough to open the file once I downloaded it...

Maybe someone from A5 will enlighten us.

The Desktop Server is a variant of the Application Server that only works locally and is used like a licensed single-user runtime for browser based applications. It is not generally available at this time.

Thanks for the clarification, Lenny. I wonder why patches are available?

Re: What is the "Destop Server"?

I did have the nerve to install the 'Patch'. Once installed, if you run it, you get an error saying a few dll's are not found. Since I found these dll's in the WAS dir, I copied those to the Desktop Server dir.

I have not written any apps to work with this server (yet!), but it seems to run and uses your WAS license key for unlimited users.

Since we own the 5 user runtime, I have not seen a need for this server in our environment.

The explanation for this server does not make sense to me. Since V8 comes with a single user Server, why have a separate product? Would this product be used for a user that does not own the runtime or the V8 language itself?

Has anyone used this product? In what environment would it be useful?
