Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    embedded browse problem

I have an embedded browse that is behaving oddly. The Browse has only 1 field . I enter text into a record then click new record. A line appears for the new record but the text in the previous record vanishes and I have to retype it. This happens more often than not. Is this a bug?
    Thanks

If you are using patch 3106, then this is a result of that bug. Download patch 3108m which was just created this AM to fix that after I reported it last night.

Correction. This is a result of patch 3108. You need to download patch 3109 to correct this.

        Re: embedded browse problem

        Thank you Melvin,
I downloaded patch 3109 but I seem to have another problem. I have an embedded browse another form that is also behaving badly. If I preform a query with the query genie, all the records in the browse disappear. I click in the scrollbar and nothing happens. If I move the slider in the scrollbar, the records reappear. All the records reappear instead of only the ones I tried to query. Does this patch need patches?
        Thanks.

          Patrick,

Build 3109 definitely fixes the embedded browse problem I reported.

I suspect you probably just need to do a tbl.fetch_first() and object.refresh() whenever the master record changes.
If your still having problems, I suggest you either submit a sample to this post, or send it to Alpha Software as a new bug.

            Re: embedded browse problem

I have included a copy of the file for you to look at.
            Open the "inventory items" form.
If you try to sort the "Iv name" field, all the records disappear.
Move the slider on the scrollbar and they return.
If you perform a query and try to sort the same field again, all the records disappear.
Clicking in the scrollbar does nothing.
If you move the slider in the scrollbar, all the records reappear and you've lost the results of your query.
If you open the "prep" browse and tried to sort the "dish ID" field, the same thing happens.
I should mention that the problem with the disappearing records only occurs when performing an ascend sort. However, performing and ascending or descending sort will cause the loss of the query results and return all the records in the table.

I tried updating to the latest build 1785-3110. After installing it twice might build still reads 1784-3110.
I am a bit of a novice when it comes to Alpha five. One of the suggestions you made earlier (do a tbl.fetch_first() and object.refresh()) didn't make sense to me. I am not quite there yet.

Hope you can shed some light on this.
            Thanks

              Patrick,

You problem seems to be from 3 no indexes on your inv table, their names all start with index_keywords. If you delete these and re-build the remaining ones the problems go away.

                Re: embedded browse problem

                I concur with Lance's analysis.

To be more specific, those indexes (which use the KEYWORDS() function, are depending on Variables, which may or may not be defined, depending on the context. It is a bad idea to create indexes on variables. If you need a sort based on a variable, then just add a button to the form and prompt the user through the special sort. Alternatively, you could add the variables to the form,
and automate the sort based on the OnChange event for the field(s).

                One further note.
Your Dish_Detail table has an _A5_Record_ index, based on Recno().
Did you add that? It shouldn't be needed, as the default index for any table is Recno(). You can verify that by simply hitting Ctrl-I on any form or browse and noting that in addition to any index you created, there is always a <Record-Number Order> option also.

Good luck, and may the code be with you. :)

                  Re: embedded browse problem

The three indexes you spoke of were never created by me. I assume I did something that prompted Alpha five to create them.
I also never created an _A5_Record_ index. I deleted all the indexes and rebuilt new ones in all the tables of the database. I tried to model the indexes after the ones I saw in the alpha sports database.
On the Money tab of the Dish Info form, there is an embedded browse for calculating the cost of ingredients in a recipe.

                  amount unit ingredient ext
                  2 pc eggs

When I enter the the above information, it doesn't calculate the extension and it gives me this error message.
error:lookupn(F,"1766", subunit_price, Inv, Item Id) not an open index.
subunit_price, Inv, Item Id are fields in inv table.
The other embedded browse on the same tab loses an occasional.
                  Thanks

                      Re: embedded browse problem

                      Patrick,

Your EXT is a calculated field in a table. I strongly advise against putting calculated fields in tables. It is better just to put them in the forms, reports & pr browses where needed.

Your real problem, however, is two fold.
                      1. Your formula in the field rules for the calculated field is:

                      DISH DETAIL->AMOUNT*DISH DETAIL->4IF*LOOKUPN("F",INV_ID,"Subunit_Price","Inv","Item_Id")

That is invalid. If you open the expression builder, you can see that the expression is listed as invalid or incomplete.

What you probably really want is
                      DISH DETAIL->AMOUNT*LOOKUPN("F",INV_ID,"Subunit_Price","Inv","Item_Id")

                      2. The index referenced in LOOKUPN (Item_Id), does not exist for the Inv table.

Once you fix those two problems, things might work better. :)
