Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Updating Alpha tables over ODBC?

    We have a couple projects that require updating data in or reading data from our Alpha database. In the past we have triggered these actions in Xbasic, uploading to or downloading from external databases as necessary. Moving forward, we would like other applications to read or update or Alpha tables as necessary without any sort of manual posting beforehand.

    Some examples:
    1. Allow our shipping software to read in shipping data based on an order number, and later write back tracking numbers.
    2. Update CAD revision numbers in the product database as new CADs are checked into our revision control system.

    Both of these products work with ODBC connections, so that is the direction we'd like to go. Are there any tutorials for accessing and updating Alpha tables via ODBC?

    Just responding since nobody else has...

    I think you are looking at this backwards. You need to know how the other programs have to work. Alpha in this case is not even involved. So I would find out how to make the connections with the other software and look for a Foxpro 2.6 ODBC driver as you will need that as the intermediary.

      The other programs connect via ODBC, so that's covered already. Just need to know the particulars about the appropriate driver for the DSN. Looks like this thread covers it to a point.

      I just tested out the Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver. I'm using AlphaADO and the SQL Command window to run SQL queries on the currently open Alpha database. Pretty swank.

      Thank you for your reply.

        Re: Updating Alpha tables over ODBC?

        We're noticing some problems in our initial testing. Updates over ODBC to an open table aren't reflected in Alpha until the form is closed and reopened, or a record is put in change mode and then saved. If a row was in change mode, the updated value will be reverted during the next save. The change is recognized for the rows that weren't in change mode. The same limitations apply to open browses.

          One of the action scripts is a form refresh(or is it repaint; dont remember off top of head), try that action script and see if it solves your form not updating issue.

            Unfortunately, form.resynch(), form.refresh_fields(), and form.refresh_layout() have no effect.

              Refresh Display was the action script I was referring to. Here is the code that the action script generates.

              Code:
              topparent.Commit()
              topparent.Resynch()
              topparent.Refresh_Layout()

                Adam,

                In addition to the functions given by Andrew, try Topparent.repaint()

                Another "method" is to do a fetch_last() and then a fetch_first(). This has helped many a browse that would not refresh unless you closed and then reopened. If you want to maintain the focus on the current record when going back to the browse then more scripting could be done to do this...(such as do a fetch_last followed by a fetch to your current record).
