Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Email Error 530...Using Gmail

Hey there...I am in need of some help. I have a gmail account that I need to send/recieve mail from.
    The settings are as follows:
    Code:
    POP: pop.gmail.com
    SMTP: smtp.gmail.com
    Name: My Name
    Email: My [email protected]
    User: My [email protected]
    Password: My Password

    ------

    Under receiving:Use SSL

    ------

    Under Sending:

Use same settings as my incoming mail server

    Using TLS

    ------

    Under Advanced:

    SMTP Port: 587

    POP Port: 995

    Network Timeout: 60 seconds
    Gmail requests the following settings:
    Configuring other mail clients

You can use the following information to configure POP with many mail clients. If you encounter difficulties, we suggest contacting your mail client's customer support department for further instructions -- we're not able to provide assistance with configuring mail clients not listed here.
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server - requires SSL: pop.gmail.com
    Use SSL: Yes
    Port: 995
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - requires TLS: smtp.gmail.com (use authentication)
    Use Authentication: Yes
Use STARTTLS: Yes (some clients call this SSL)
    Port: 465 or 587
Account Name: your Gmail username (including @gmail.com)
Email Address: your full Gmail email address ([email protected])
    Password: your Gmail password

Please note that if your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

    * Did you click 'Save Changes' after enabling POP in Gmail? To ensure that Gmail can communicate with your mail client, be sure to click Save Changes on the Gmail Forwarding and POP settings page.
My account setting for POP forwarding is enabled and saved.

When I test the account settings in Alpha I am presented with this error:
    ---
Connect to Outgoing (SMTP) Server succeeded.
    ---
Login to Outgoing (SMTP) Server succeeded.
    ---
    Test e-mail send failed:
    530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first h13sm412000wxd
    What have I missed...all thoughts are welcome....Thanks

    Re: Email Error 530...Using Gmail

I was trying again to get gmail to work with alpha 5 V8 and I am still getting the same error 530.
Was wondering if you ever resolved the problem with this error message.

      Re: Email Error 530...Using Gmail

I wish i could report success...but i cannot. I tried and fought with this for hours to no avail...I believe it is some kind of internal error with alpha (or just lack of support for Gmail)

I tried the email profiles with a third party email account and alpha was able to send and receive. I presume it is related just to Gmail...

Perhaps someone from the wonderful alpha team could look into this...The spam features on Gmail make a great filter for a email system through Alpha...Id report this as a bug but am not sure how...

Sorry to report failure...but i hope you can get a different solution to work if the team does not find a fix.

        James,
Id report this as a bug but am not sure how...
Simply go the the top menu of Alpha, choose help, then choose "send a bug report". Make sure you include a sample of what does not work with explicit instructions as to how to reproduce the problem. Just mentioning something on this board usually will not get Alpha's attention as they do not read all posts and cannot fix a bug they cannot reproduce easily espeically if they do not even know about it!!.

            James

I can confirm that the Alpha email client (tested in v8) SMTP for sending does not work for gmail accounts.

I have just run into the same problem myself.

N.B. The smtp server should be set for SSL and port 465, although if you use Incredimail, depending on the ISP you will need to use (sometimes) port 25 (default) with SSL.

              Re: Email Error 530...Using Gmail

It gets worse... after striking out with V8, I tried downloading V9 and using Gmail. Didn't get the same problem... Alpha V9 just wouldn't log into the SMTP side at all.

I give up... deleted V9 from my system and called it quits. No more upgrades for me. After looking through the forums, I've come to the belief this is yet another bug that Alpha has pushed off to the next version, and it will probably turn up in V10. If the software can't be used as a total solution to communications with members of an organization, it's of no use to me. No more upgrades... too bad, been using Alpha since A4V3 and really enjoyed the trip up until now.
