Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse View to Form View

I have a table with equipment records. When I select a row in the browse and go to the form, to view the details for the selected line, the form shows record no. 1 and not the item I selected in the browse.

If I open the browse, select the item I want to view, quick filter it, then I get what I need in the form.

How can I get the detail on the form without using a quick filter first.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the same problem with AlphaSports' CustomerBrowse? it's working ok here. If I open the browse, select a row, and then use F8 to open the default companion form I get the form opening prepositioned to the selected record.

Here are things that might be different for you:

    a) are you opening the default companion form, or have you specified a custom "companion form" in the properties of your browse layout? Does that form include filtering or ordering expressions in its properties?

    b) is your browse layout showing the records in a particular sort order? Is it different from the sort order defined in the companioin form?

    c) does the CustomerBrowse layout in AlphaSports work ok for you? (this probably should have been my first question)

      Thanks Tom for your reply...

      1. I have a specific custom form.

      2. Browse order is set to "ENTITY". Form order is set to "ENTITY"

      3. Alpha Sports does the same thing as my application.

In AlphaSports if I open the customer form, then click on the browse button in the menu bar, the browse view opens. I then click on Customer ID # 55 which is John Black. Then go back to the menu bar and select View Form Button. The form that pops up is Cust ID # 32 Winston Abrams.

And... I have other browses and forms that work great together and I see no difference in these.

Re: Browse View to Form View

Based on your first post I thought you were beginning from the saved browse layout, but you're not... at least you didn't when you used AlphaSports. If you start with the saved browse layout "CustomerBrowse" it toggles back and forth using the default companion form just fine. Something else is going on when you begin with the CustomerInformation form. I see the same problem if I start from there, instead of from the Customer Browse layout. This looks like a bug to me so I've submitted a bug report.

Re: Browse View to Form View

In Alpha sport I have the same problem even if I enter in the form from the menu and then press F8.

I even have another problem with companion forms and embedded browses in my database.

If I insert an embedded browse based on the original table (not a saved layout but the default view), the companion browse button is working.

If I try to insert a saved browse this is not working anymore! I am getting mad!

Which can be the causes? Which info you need to help me?

            thank you a lot

                Jim,

You're describing a similar problem to the one I was experiencing for the last 8 hours...but at 2am, I think I've stumbled upon a solution.

Go to the form that opens up after you've made your selection in the browse.
Go to form > form properties > filter/order tab
Type in .t. in the filter expression box.
                Save and try again.

                Cheers,

                nick
