Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Web Server Holding File Server Files Open

A customer of mine has a web server that is a seperate box from his main file server. The company uses an A5 LAN/desktop system against this file server for the majority of their work.

If we access files through the web server, it appears that they are being held open, which means we can't manage structures, field rules, or indexes.

This is a Windows Server 2003. After accessing files through the web, my customer goes to Computer Management / Shared Folders where he can view open files, and he can see, even after the web user (me) has logged out and even closed my browser, that the various files that were used
are still shown as "in use."

He can force them to be closed, but when he does that and I come back in to try again through the web server, I get this error when trying to make use of the customer.dbf:

    500 Internal Server Error
    "Script Error
    Error:Script:pagetop.a5w line:39
    t = table.open("f:\customer.dbf", file_rw_shared, "", "mypassword")
Error loading f:\customer.dbf: The handle is invalid.
    customer.dbf"
The only solution to getting things back in running order is to reboot the web server.

    What to do?

Edit: Customer reminds me that it appears the problem began about the same time we rolled back the build to Build 1658-3088 last week in our attempt to solve the pdf printing problem. Dunno how exact the timing might have been, and if you've been reading here you know that the pdf problem didn't get resolved anyway. I s'pose we could try yet another more recent patch, but quite frankly I've lost track of builds and which one(s) might not have a critical problem.

Just ideas, I don't know these to be true:

    - Could FILE_RW_SHARED cause a problem, leaves tble open? I don't often use that flag, so not sure what impact on the web.
    - Not closing the table?
    - Can you throw in an IsOpen() to see if the table DOES close when you log off.
    - Maybe your Security Framework setting keeps you logged in or session active AFTER browser is closed.

      Code:
      - Maybe your Security Framework setting keeps you logged in or session active AFTER browser is closed.
It's set to "Expires when the user closes their browser."

Even that doesn't free up the files - we experimented yesterday afternoon with this. We can fiddle with the options but thought I'd see if you have further experience/info on it.
