Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to copy a form to another database?

I am working on a local copy of a database, and I would need to be able to make changes to forms/brouses/reports/etc locally, and then copy them to the server. The main database is constantly in use, so I can't just tell the whole company to stop working while I make major changes to the application. Back in versions 4 and 4.5 it was possible to just open two instances of Alpha, one for each database, and copy a form from one to the other. When we upgraded to v.5, I kept a copy o A5v4 just for the copy function. Now that we upgraded to v.8, I'm not even sure where my a5v4 CD is... and it wasn't a great workaround anyway.

So, is there any way to work on a local database and then copy the changes to the server - without changing the content of the tables?

If you make a new form/etc you can right click on it and select copy to in the list

If you are doing other changes(other than changing tABLES) you can copy the proper files like .ddd .ddm etc to the main database.

Either way, You will still have to update the version number for the shadow to retrieve it on the next restart of the work stations.

        Dave,
I welcome your response cause I also needed the info, sadly when I right click on the form (as per your response) I do not see a 'copy to' or any other similar item. Could you be a bit more specific please? Ie where exactly should I see the 'copy to' item?

        Regards
        George

          George,
Right click on the form in the Control Panel. Toward the bottom you will see Copy To... .

              Hi George,

I am constantly updating forms, reports, scripts, etc in working db's on my development copy and then copying those changes to the live db's using Jim Chapman's Import/Export utility that he has posted to the CODE ARCHIVE. Here is the link if you are interested in playing around with it.

              http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=22900

I have found this the easiest for me. In my development copy, I 'export' the file to a folder on my local pc. I then copy that .abn file to my clients live db working directory. Then load their live app, and 'import' all .abn files.

              Good luck
