Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with Browse

    Hello,

I am quite a newbie, so this question might be funny .... Nevertheless:

I created a database with 3 tabs: Person/Invoice/Item. I created a set: Person-Invoice-Item with a "one:many" relation each. Then I created a form based on the set. In this form I used a tabbed object with 3 tabs: person, invoice and item. When clicking on a person's entry on the first tab (person), the right invoices (tab #2) are displayed. But then when clicking on an invoice only the items of the first invoice in tab #2 are displayed in tab #3 (items).

    Example:
    3 Persons: Miller, Smith, Meyers
    Smith has 5 invoices: #4, #22, #55

When clicking on "Smith" (tab #1) the right invoices #4, #22 and #55 are displayed in tab #2. But then when clicking in invoice #22 only the items of invoice #4 are displayed in tab#3. And it is also only possible to create a new record for invoice #4.

    Is this a bug?
    Thank you very much
    Roland Strasser, Austria

Roland, perhaps, but not likely. Please zip a sample database and post it here as an attachment. Tell us which form you're talking about. [ To attach the zip file use the "Go Advanced" button and then "Manage Attachments" to upload it. ]

      Hi Roland,

In addition to what Tom is asking, define your set structure in a little more detail to us. You say one to many links, but your results lead me to think the following structure:

      person
      invoice 1:M to person
      items 1:M to person

      You should have:

      person
      invoice 1:M to person
      items 1:M to invoice

      Good luck

        Re: Problem with Browse

Thanks Tom, for your reply. As mentioned, I do not hav a lot of experience so far. But I used to work with Filemaker and 4D.

With Alpha5 it is not possible to show data from another table on a form based on another table (big disadvantage compared to eg. Filemaker!). So you have to use forms based on sets and to work with embedded browses an subforms. Otherwise it must be very difficult to work with data combined from different tables and forms based on these tables.

The form in question is "Person_Rechnung_Form": Tabbed object with 3 tabs (Person, Rechnung=invoice, Leistung=item -> German language).

Unfortunately I did not succeed in uploading the zip-File (253KB - technical reasons??). I will try it later.

        Bye,
        Roland

          Hi Cheryl,

thanks but I defined the relations as you suggested. I hope I will succeed in uploading the file ...

              Re: Problem with Browse

Roland, you're mistaken about Alpha Five. It is easy to display records from tables that are NOT part of the set supporting your form, you just can't do it with a browse object. Use a record-list listbox if you must. In my experience the need to display unlinked records on the user's data entry form is a warning flag that the underlying table structures need more work. If you're displaying the unlinked records so the user can pick values to insert into the current record, you're working too hard and not taking advantage of the built in table lookup field rule capabilities.

                Hi,
the error message when trying to upload the file is something like "connection refused". But this must be a techical problem of this board. I will ask Alpha5.

                Bye

                  Hi Roland,

I looked at your set structure and your form and the form is working correctly for me and not as you described. Unfortunately I am looking at it in V7, perhaps it is something in V8.

I am uploading the zip file for Roland here so that perhaps Tom or somebody else can look at the issue in V8 and determine if that is the issue or not.

                  Good luck

                    Thanks Cheryl.
                    Roland,

I took a quick look using v8 and I see what Roland describes. The child table shows the correct records for the parent but the grandchild only shows records for the first child.

The set structure seems fine. I opened a default form for the set and this behaves correctly. I created a new form using embedded browses instead of saved browses as Roland has it and this form behaves as well.

I took a look using v7 and see what Cheryl sees. That the records display correctly. There must be some thing different in the way that V8 is interacting with saved browes. Possibly a bug.

Personally I don't use saved browses in forms I always just use an embedded browse. Maybe others that do can comment further.

I would recommend that unless you are going to use the same browse in multiple forms that you just use an embedded browse. Even then you can still cut and paste an embedded browse to another form using the same table if you want the same layout.

And as an aside. I noticed that you are using numeric fields as linking key fields. It is generally advised when using Alpha to use character type for this purpose and to use numeric fields only if the data needs to be used in some mathematical calculation. One of the reasons I can think of is that indexing is done in character type so any numeric fields that are indexed will be converted to character for the index.

                      Hi Cheryl, hi Tim,

thanks a lot for your help. I see there are some differences in the behaviour of Alpha5 compared to other systmes. I'll keep on working on my knowledges ... :-)
