Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    E-mail links in memo fields

Someone asked this regarding a5v6 a few years back and had no answers. Now I have the same problem :(

When you type an e-mail address in a memo field, it gets automatically converted to a link - so if you click on it, it opens either the default e-mail app or the e-mailer from Alpha. I have users who are annoyed with this - if they click the e-mail address by mistake when they edit the memo field, the Outlook windows gets in the way of what they're doing.

Is there a way to disable this? I still need to have e-mail functionality, I just don't want my e-mail addresses in memo fields converted to links.

Re: E-mail links in memo fields

one way is to copy(via xbasic) the email address into a field on a form, then delete the address. If you need in in the memo, not sure what to do.

I been copying the information as I get emails to fields then clearing the memo field for space saving and not wanting to deal with corrupted memos. I copy the names, emails, addresses, phones, etc to fields. collect the needed other data the same way.

Unfortunately I really need it in the memo. It's for a transpot/logistics app, and the users need to have a note with the e-mails of whoever called from the shipper/consignee/customer. Often whoever calls is different from the people who are in the defaul contact/e-mail fields, so the user needs to just jot down a note in a memo.

          Marius,

If I were in your situation I would look into trapping it some way so that the "link" can never be clicked while inside a memo field or even if clicked to have nothing happen even though it does appear as a link.

Sorry, but that's all I have right now ..just the thought of a way is all.

I looked a bit further and perhaps by turning your email off while in a memo field would work--off with the OnArrive event and on with the OnDepart event. The way to do this varies with how you have your mail setup--default , Alpha, etc. but a possibility would be to use the EMAIL_SET_ACTIVE() function and set it to a bogus profile for off.

              marrius,

If you remove it from the memo to a field, you can still include it in correspondence by email, print or report of somekind by reinserting the field.

              just a thought.
