Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disappearing Set Info after Recalc

    Has anyone ever experienced the following or have an idea?

    I have a form based on a Set with the following configuration:

    Parent
    ||
    ||===>Child1
    ||
    ||===>Child1a

    I have a button that recalculates calculated fields in the Parent table and the Child 1 table. It then performs a form refresh and the only thing that is left is the Parent record. All of the child information is gone and I have to close the form and open it to see all of the data again. This used to work but I'm not sure if it's related to one of the patches or maybe something I'm overlooking. Don't believe I made any changes to this Set.

    Thanks for any input.

    Is either of the linking fields between parent and child1 involved in the recalc?
    There can be only one.

      They are. The linking field between the 2 child tables is a calculated field. I am going to try and change that and see if that helps. I also noticed that I was using the "A5_RECALC_CALC_FIELDS() function and have changed it to the <TBL>.RECALC_CALCFIELDS() method. It didn't change the behavior but the documentation states the following:

      The a5_recalc_calc_fields() function closes any sessions that are bound to the table whose calculated fields you are recalculating, and this could cause instability in a running application.
      I'll post my findings after the re-work....

        I have taken the calculated field out of the linking field and the problem still exists. When I recalculate the calculated fields in the set while displaying a form all of the child records disappear and it only shows the parent record. I had this working and now it seems to be broken. I've tried to load some earlier loads to see if it was a poential bug. If anyone has any ideas please share.

        Thanks,

          Ok....more developments..

          I was wondering if anyone using the <TBL>.RECALC_CALCFIELDS() method has ever used it on a form displaying a Set? I have tried numerous iterations with the same result. The recalc takes place and I then refresh the form. All of the child information goes away and I have to close the form and reopen. I have tried to open the current version of the tables and recalc but it just hangs up the system. I need to be able to do a recalc on the form and show the immediate results.

            Have never used your method, not that its a bad idea. It was usually sufficient to use the refresh whe a field was changed. Now use a script(as many as 8) to do calculations which means saving field data to variables, mnipulate in scripts and read it back to the fields. It seemed to work better, although it was difficult to setup a first. Once done, seems much faster and easier for me to maintain.

            My deal numbers are all collected(about 40 fields) into vars, script 1 then figures out which other script is needed and then the calcs are done which resets the vars as needed.

            Hope I helped.
