Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Licensing - confused!

I have been an Alpha customer for years and it is still confusing to me how to understand all the variations of versions. When is somebody at Alpha5 going to straighten this out and make it understandable to all??? I have just upgraded to V8 Pro and I can't seem to find out how to buy more licenses so that it can be networked by 5 users. PLEASE SOMEBODY MAKE IT UNDERSTANDABLE! Golly...I'm sure that I am not the only one out there judging from the questions being asked. I think you could really sell this product if, upon entering and browsing your site, anyone who isn't a computer geek could understand what your offering and what is the price!!!
    Ugghh...please straighten it out...maybe it's just me!

    Re: Licensing - confused!

    Jim,

The confusion might stem from the fact that Alpha is a development platform and there are many developers who need the different incarnations for their diffferent customers.

That aside, to hopefully straighten things out the way I see it is:

    Development Versions of AlphaFive
There are 3 different A5 versions - Desktop, Professional and Enterprise. The details of each are well outlined here (broken link removed)
You require one each of these for anyone who is going to make any modifications to how the application works eg) Scripting, XBasic, create new forms, reports, browses. The main difference you should be aware of here is the fact that the Desktop version cannot be used to develop applications for use in the runtime versions or networked applications.

    Runtime Versions of AlphaFive
There is no runtime available for the Desktop version only for the Pro. and Ent. editions.
The Standard Runtime will allow no access to change the application in any way. That must all happen using the full versions of Pro. or Ent. This is what you would purchase if you are going to let your happy end users work but not play with your applications internal workings.
The Runtime Plus will allow the user to create their own reports. Otherwise it is like the Standard Version.
There are different runtime versions for Pro. and Ent. So if you develop the app in Pro you only need the Pro runtime.
The runtimes come in different configurations of Users eg) 3 user, 5 user, 10 user. This means that if you have a 3 user version then only 3 people can work with the app at one time. You mention you have 5 users so if they are all going to access the app at the same time then you might consider the 5 user Pro runtime.

Now having said all this, you really have to know what it is that you want and then look at what you need because there are infinite combinations all depending on YOUR needs. For example, say that there are 2 people that do some of the application development and they each have a different computer and the other 3 people only USE the application. Then you could get 2 full Pro versions and 1 3-User Pro runtime - 2+3=5.

So once you have determined whether you need the Pro. or Ent. version, you need to ask yourself 3 questions:
    1) How many people need to be able to DEVELOP applications?
    2) How many people need to just USE the applications?
    3) How many people need to just USE the applications and create their own reports?
The first question answers how many full versions you need and the second how many Standard Runtime versions you need and the third how many Runtime Plus versions you need.

Hopefully I have not confused you any further. If so, tell us a little more about what each of your 5 users will do with AlphaFive and then maybe we can point you in the right direction.
