Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Collaborative Volunteer Effort

I wanted to draw attention to a conversation started as a tangent in another thread.

This is about what we might be able to accomplish working together towards a common goal. It includes some fresh observations about what users of various other development platforms have done. If you have a vested interest in promoting the adoption of Alpha into new markets, you'd probably want to participate in this discussion.

    Re: Collaborative Volunteer Effort

I second what Steve said here (pointing out an earlier discussion that started in another thread).

There is a lot of potential benefit that can come from the idea of a collaborative volunteer effort. Participating could be a personally and professionally rewarding experience too.

But, one should only chime in if they want to (rather than feeling that they should do so).

      Re: Collaborative Volunteer Effort

      Steve,

The other thread is getting a bit off the original intent.

I suggest this thread be used determine what needs to be developed and to create a consortium of developers that will contribute.

I'll start by saying count me in as a helper. :)

        Re: Collaborative Volunteer Effort

This important conversation has started up and then died out way too many times. So I am petitioning Alpha to add a new Forum on this Message Board for this sort of conversation. The conversation cannot be sustained as long as it is mixed in with all these application development questions.

We already have a VAR forum (hidden unless you are a VAR). But that has had no activity, and its not public. I'd like to hear others second this idea and suggest a name for this Forum. My suggestion is to add a new Forum broadly named something like "Water Cooler" and with topic areas such as:

        - User Groups
        - Developer's Consortium
        - Feature Wish List (which is inappropriately listed under the Desktop Forum)

Water Cooler is probably a bad Forum name, but I can't think of anything else. DataEase (where I came from) had this sort of area on their message board, and it had tons of insiteful activity. That area looked like this:

        News & Other Interesting Stuff
        - Blatant Advertising
        - People
        - Open Talk
        - Humor

        Jobs
        - Full Time Positions
        - Contract Positions
        - Positions/App Development Wanted

          Re: Collaborative Volunteer Effort

Having a separate forum heading for these collaborative development discussions makes a ton of sense. Among the developers, there will be a lot of discussion going on. That should not get mixed in with other general topics.

Following your suggestion further, it seems that you're suggesting some forum categories be added to accommodate collaborative software development (I agree) and other topics that encourage greater presence and participation in the forum (e.g., jobs or social) and thus closer engagement in Alpha software. That's a good idea too.

vBulletin supports sub-forums (presumably multi-level sub-forums) so we could have a header and sub-categories like

Collaborative Module Development (Merely a header for sub-forums)
          -- Module Standards
          -- Module Announcements
-- Module Suggestions or Offers to Help
-- Module Developer Discussions (developers only)
          -- Module #1
          -- -- Questions/bugs relating to module #1
-- -- Developer discussion relating to module #1 (developers only)
-- -- Suggested Improvements relating to module #1
          -- -- Announcements relating to module #1
(repeat the module #1 sub-forum and sub-sub-forums as above for other modules)

Additionally, vBulletin allows delegating moderator function to users, so someone Alpha trusted could coordinate the collaborative-development-related forums. No extra work for Alpha.

I suppose this is all obvious but I hope Alpha sees it that way. They would be the biggest benefactor of a grassroots development effort. The users would be a close second.

          Regards,
          Dave
