Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

memo field randomly refuses new text, then shows as bold

I'm having problems with a a memo field in an application developed under v.7 & upgraded to v. 8 a month or 2 ago. This didn't seem to be happening in v.7. The user is typing text into the memo field on a form. Suddenly the memo field will no longer accept any more text. So he clicks the pencil, and is then able to add more text to the field. However, when he closes the memo box, the text he has just typed doesn't appear in the memo field on the form. If he switches to a different record & then goes back to the original record, the additional text DOES appear, but the text is now bold & any additional text is bold. Also, after this happens a few times, the whole application slows way down - to the point of being virtually frozen sometimes, and he has to close A5 & re-start it.

I tried check/repair memo fields & didn't get any errors. If anything, the problem is worse since I did that.

This is Enterprise addition on a network - don't know if that would make any difference. I haven't installed the most recent patch, but there was nothing about this in the release notes and so far applying patches hasn't helped at all.

I looked at some other posts about memo fields, and some seemed to say that you can't just put a memo field on a form & edit it the way you would any other field. We haven't had problems doing this before & I'm not sure how to work with a field that the user can't edit. It seems to me that this can't be the case!

So.. nobody seems to have any experience with this kind of problem? I guess I'll try going to the latest build & then submit a bug report.

You should be able to edit a memo field on a form. The problem arises is that if the user inadvertently fetches another record while in change or enter mode, the memo field may be vulnerable to wholesale corruption.

It sounds like you are referring to an RTF Memo field, not a standard memo field? RTF's tend to be somewhat unreliable in my experience. Do submit a bug report along w. a (non?)-working example.

This is just a plain old memo field, not rtf. You say that the memo can be corrupted if the user "inadvertently fetches another record while in change or enter mode".
I'd like to understand this better. The form is modeless. Most of the time, the user is editing existing records. Are you saying that if he doesn't hit the save button before he goes to the next record, he'll end up with the memo being corrupted? Or if he moves to the browse on the same tab & fetches a record fro a linked file? Or both?

Correct - that is a possibility.

Or if he moves to the browse on the same tab & fetches a record fro a linked file?

IF he is in change mode corruption is possible.

So, can I put a record save on the memo field's onDepart or canDepart event to prevent this? Also, how can I fix what's already there? The check/repair memo fields doesn't seem to have any effect.

This is the MUST read article for anyone using memo fields:

Try exporting the records to a similar structured table, and see if that fixes it. I would create the duplicate table from scratch - w/o field rules or forms, etc. If the data imports whole and intact, zap the original table's records, and export back from your dup to the master. Make sure you back up before doing anything!

Thanks Peter. I'll continue looking at ways to tighten up memo processing on this form per the suggestions in this article.
