Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Embedded Browse Mystery

Just so you all know i am not crazy:) I have used my demobuilder software to record my problem in action. I have created a flash version of the video and zipped it as a stand alone executable and as an html version.

Let me know if this shines any light.

      Re: Embedded Browse Mystery

      Tony,

After viewing your flash video I can now duplicate your problem but still do not know entirely what is causing it. Once focus is off the Exercise Browse any refresh of the form (F5) will produce the browse record jump...but I cannot find what is causing the refresh (if anything). That is, if a refresh is indeed the cause or if there is something else that can cause focus to jump to the first browse record.

It was happening by itself occaisionally in the beginning, but then stopped and the ony way to make it happen was to push F5 after this time. Hopefully someone can expand and maybe find the exact reason.

Note--I do understand that a refresh will cause a record pointer to go to the first record--I am simply suggesting that this problem sure does resemble this happening,

        Re: Embedded Browse Mystery

Tony, I've looked at the zip file and the flash demo and still do not understand the sequence to run in order to see the behavior you think is wrong. I do not yet understand why you think it's wrong, either. Guess my intuit button is failing.

        Here's what I try:
        1. Open the Client Main form-This will set variable values that are used in the next form. I can do this fine, after first dismissing your startup form. I assume it's ok to dismiss the startup form, but you didn't say one way or the other.
        2. Open the Assign Workout1 form I can do this fine. And again I'm assuming it's ok to do this from the control panel, since you didn't say.
        3. Select workout #1 (3123) Workout Number 1 Here the confusion begins. I select the workout from the pane on the right and nothing happens. I double click it and nothing happens. Perhaps I erred by selecting Lee as the client/student since you omitted that step? Perhaps "select workout" means something that I don't understand?
        4. Select exercise #99 sdasfdasd. I'm lost at this point. there is no exercise #99 anywhere on screen to be selected, and I don't know what you mean by "select"
        5. Under "set information" above the exercise try to type a number in set 2-set 8 field. It should automatically switch to the first record in the browse.
I'd like to help, but at least for me you will have to supply very specific instructions using actual table, form, button, and field names. Every keystroke and every mouse click required to see the problem should be included in the list of instructions. You should assume the reader knows nothing about the purpose of your application or the relationships between the tables and fill in the blanks necessary for an appreciation of the problem.

          Tom,
I think maybe it would be best if i shot another quick video. I can show from the application start up all of the way to the "problem"

I should appologize. I am new to all of this so my terminology and such is a little poor.
          Thanks for our help.

              Re: Embedded Browse Mystery

Tony, thanks, that helped a lot. Are the forms you display in the demo the same as the forms in your upload here October 20th ?

              Two quick ideas for you:

              a) in debugging an interface like this I prefer to show the default form view menu and toolbar. It helps me understand what Alpha is doing as I move through the form. Here your form suppresses these so it's hard to tell, for example, when the form has gone into change or enter mode. I suggest you re-display the default menu and toolbar while working on the design and then suppress them after everything is working correctly.

              b) your set enables referential integrity by cascading changes or deletes. I recommend you turn that off. At least during development, and possibly forever.

              Later...

              c) a third idea -> follow the same sequences but use the "default form" for your set, instead of your custom data entry form. Do you see the same problem? If not, that's a good indicator the difficulty lies in your form layout. If you do see the problem it is usually a good indicator that the problem lies in your field rules.

Good advice. I will do this right away. Do you think the cascading changes is the problem? Should I remove this from all of my sets?

BTW. All of the forms are still the same. I did delete the radio buttons from the form in question. That is all that is different.

                    Re: Embedded Browse Mystery

Whether to enable referential integrity or not is a design question that varies from app to app. To get a sampling of opinions I suggest searching the Alpha Five forums for threads discussing referential integrity. In my own work I never ever use it. This is because I design my apps for use by workstations sharing a database over their local network. I would consider using RI if I knew my app would always and only run on a single stand alone machine.

                      Okay Tom,
I just created a browse based off of the client_set.set that includes basicly the same fields that are on the assign_workout1 form. I saved the browse and recorded my activity.

To clairify what is going on in the video...I clicked on a field in the browse. Entered a number, and used my arrow keys to navigate around. As I navigate laterally from field to filed notice what happens to the exercise name. Likewise notice what happens when i navigate to a different record (vertically).

Are you using the latest patch for Alpha Five vers 8?

Have you forgotten to include the EXE file containing your latest demo?

It was suggested to try a previous build. I am still on that build (3112).

If you double click on the html file in the folder I zipped it should play in your web browser. I accidently for got to save the exe version so i sent the html version.

I think this is a display refresh issue and have submitted a bug report.
