Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    When a hidden form isn't hidden

    I have an action script where I need to open a form to "set" some values using global variables. I set the action script to open the form in Hidden - Modeless form. I set a value, change to a different record, set a value (I do this twice), then I close the form. When I go thru debug, I don't see the hidden form but when I activate the action script "on push" from a button, I see the hidden form pop up and then go out almost immediately. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I find I can SET variables to values contained in a table without opening that table or a form for that table but, I can't figure out how to SET those values in the table using a global variable without opening the form, hence my problem above. I just want to get the value in the table, put it in a variable, change the variable and then go back and change the original value in the table with my new variable value.

    Re: When a hidden form isn't hidden

    Sounds like you need some Xbasic help? Doing this with a form is unwieldy, at the least.

    If your last sentence is a guide, and with no information on what you have to find the correct record, let me generalize:

    to set the variable:

    Code:
    dim global myVar as C
    t = table.open("mytable")
    t.index_primary_put("myindex")
    t.fetch_find(MyIndexValue)
    MyVar = alltrim(t.Myfield)
    t.close()
    Now, I'm assuming your doing something here to change the variable value, so now that it's changed:

    Code:
    t = table.open("mytable")
    t.index_primary_put("myindex")
    t.fetch_find(MyIndexValue)
    t.change_begin()
     t.Myfield = MyVar
    t.change_end(.t.)
    t.close()
    Does that help?

      Re: When a hidden form isn't hidden

      Yes, that helps but let me play with it. I know that most of these questions are hard to figure out when you are at the other end. I have a chart of accounts. The table name is accts. In that chart of accounts, I have three records. Those records have a field called balance. One record for Cash, one for Savings, one for Checking. When I open one form called MENU, I run an action script which goes into that table and sets three global variables called vn_cash_balance, vn_check_balance, vn_save_balance. Then, on a "bank transfers" form, I display those three variables as the field values. Then, I have another variable on the form called vn_transfer. The operator enters a number and clicks on a transfer button to transfer from cash to checking or checking to savings. Then, when the operator accepts the action as viewed in a dialogue message box, I need to go back into accts and change the value in whichever two accounts the operator has changed. I need to write newvn_cash and newvn_check or newvn_save to the account records in accts and I don't want a chart of accounts form to pop up. I use action scripting because I am not well versed in xbasic. But, I can work with your examples and see where it gets me.
