Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tab control - tabs dissappearing

I have attached a screen shot of a form with a tab control. We are having an issue where the tabs are disappearing during data entry.

At this time the problem has manifested its self in two different databases on two separate computers. On my workstation I have not had the tab's disappear as of yet. The two computers that have experienced the issue are both running the runtime version of alpha5 ver8. I am running a developer's copy of alpha5.

At this time I am unable to reproduce this error, but we do experience it around 2-3 times a week in one database. When we are entering data into the form, we start on the left most tab and work our way to the right. We use tab stops to navigate from field to field. We will see the problem start after we leave the first tab, the first tab will disappear as in the screen shot but all of the other tabs will still look fine. Once the first tab has disappeared the other tabs will disappear as soon as you click to different tab. Once the tab has disappeared you can not click it to view the tab. Closing the form and re-opening it will temporarily correct the problem, the tabs return but as you leave them they disappear one by one. Currently we are stuck at shutting down Alpha5 and restarting it. This will typically buy us a day or two before we see the problem again.

Has anyone else experienced this before? Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing it? I have not submitted a bug report as of yet, because I am not sure if it is a bug or a programming error.

    Side note -
The problem has been reported in two separate databases. One of those databases is a copy of our MD billing application. There are 8 copies of this database that we use. All 8 copies are the exact same in structure and code used. Only one of the 8 has experienced this problem, that one is our biggest of them all. Typically the problem wont be seen until we have entered several records (i.e. around 50+ records). The other 7 MD billing databases do not experience this amount of data entry at one time, nor have they experienced this issue.

The other report that I have had of this issue came from an accounting database package. Two people use that database, only one person has reported the tabs disappearing issue from that database.

    Hallo Andrew,

I have the same problem. Funny, also in a MD database (must be coincidence). Strange thing is that I can see the tabs in the Form editor, but not in the Form view mode. Restarting Alpha doesn't solve the problem in my case.

When I find the solution, I'll let you know.

That wasn't too hard! Solverd the problem by moving the fields inside the Tab-control away from the edges and placing the control itself away from the edge of the screen. Didn't think of it myself (I know of the existence of Alpha Five since one week now), but read this thread:

      http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...eferrerid=5912

      Hope it helps you too.

Re: Tab control - tabs dissappearing

I checked my tab control and I do not have objects aligned on the tab control border. In the thread you linked, the other resolution was to click the area where the tabs where to restore them. This does not work for me either.

In my screenshot notice how the toolbar at the top of the page has also experienced a glitch. Both the tabs and the toolbar have the glitch at the same time. The only way I know how to fix it is to shut down Alpha5 and restart it. Then start working until it happens again.

          Andrew,

Had a similar problem and found a "lost field" that was agains the edge of the tab. Lost means it did not show up. For some reason it had dissappeared, but was still there. It took a lot of time, but I was having a problem even while working on the form and more problems when it started. Lost fields can happen in a tabbed object. I am not sure how it happens though. Just kept clicking around on the suspect tab that I had cleared until the tell-tell dots appeared. Comncentrated on the edges like the other post had indicated.

This may not be your problem though

You can also use the object explorer to aid in finding a lost object. There could be names that you would not recognize possibly. You can also highlight an object in the explorer if you do not recognize it and select current object which will take you to where that object exists. It is a long process sometimes, but it will help you find the object causing the problem.

Yep! As Dave and Cheryl have indicated this can happen to cause your problems---also look "under" your large objects (tabbed form, browser, etc) as I have twice, so far, found an invisible object underneath another object---apparently it was caused when I initially dragged multiple objects onto the form and simply missed one (off the form almost) and then covered it up when I made the browse larger at a later time. Another time it was an object that was among several I had deleted...but again somehow it got buried underneatch an object.

              My point---look VERY carefully!!

Re: Tab control - tabs dissappearing

I again went thru the form, no controls on the edge of the tab control. No controls hidden or "lost" either. Just to be on the safe side I expanded the size of the tab control.

I will test and post back what we find.

If my problem was caused by a control being too close to the edge, shouldn't I be seeing the tabs disappear in all 8 copies of the same database?

                  Hello Andrew,

Perhaps the problem is caused by hardware/memory issues on the computers that are having difficulty? It could also be caused by the code running behind the scenes that is not clearing the memory somehow?

If it is happening to one only after adding 50+ records, perhaps the code behind adding those records or saving them is causing the difficulty?

Edit: maybe it is an indexing problem? Just trying to give options for other things to look at.

Re: Tab control - tabs dissappearing

Tabs dissappeared again yesterday afternoon, had to restart Alpha5 to fix it. Resizing the tab form did not resolve it. I updated the video card drivers today on the off chance that will fix it.

I will look at the code behind the form today to see if there is anything that would be causing it.

One of the machines having problems has an exact twin (i.e. hardware and install image are same). The twin machine is not having any issues with the tabs, biggest major difference between the two machines is the version of alpha5 running. The problem machine is running runtime and the good machine is running enterprise.

Tab disappearing still occurring. I looked at the code attached to the record onEnter event and OnSave event, I do not see anything wrong with them. Of course I don't know what I am looking for other than xbasic typo's or leaving a table open.

This is a very frustrating issue, I don't even know how to recreate the issue. But it sure does come up everyday.

I sent a bug email off to Alpha5, hopefully they have some suggestions to try.

                        God bless Alpha5.

Issue has been fixed, they released a beta patch last week that appears to have resolved the problem. We tested it today and did not have any issues with the tabs disappearing. From the description of the problem it was a memory leak somewhere.

                        Thank you all for helping.

Status Update - No issues since installing the beta patch. Patch 1864_3129 released on 29 NOV 2007 is the official patch for this problem.
