Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Great development tool

if you haven't heard of Parallels Desktop, it is worth a look. www.parallels.com

It allows you to run Virtual machines from DOS to Vista, (plus Linux) simultaneously. Each VM behaves like it's own computer. They also have a Mac product that allows you to run windows side by side with mac apps(unlike Boot Camp where you have to boot into one or the other). Very reasonably priced as well and great if you are supporting clients that run on different OS's.

If you have Vista or XP and have no need to run DOS or Linux go to

    www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx

for Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (it's free)

I have used parallels (need Linux) not the Microsoft product.

Bill, I bought a macbook pro because I could run XP in a Parallels window so I could do my alpha5 development primarily. It works great. I haven't tried vmware's Fusion which will do the same. Have been happy with Parallels for over 18 months.

      Ken,

I have heard good things about VMware's product for the mac. I did have problems with their PC product loading Red Hat Linux, so I went with Parallels Workstation (they almost look and feel the same) The price on the parallels product was much less than VMware also.

The new Mac OS looks really cool. It is the first time I would actually consider switching to a Mac. Glad that Parallels works well, I have a whole lot of expensive PC software I would have a hard time replacing in the Mac environment.

One of the really nice things about Vmware is that they have a ton of virtual appliances that you can use (and create). So if I want Red Hat running in a virtual machine, I can go to vmware.com and download the appropriate version and presto its there - no installation! Vmware also has a lot of really neat tricks that you can do with your hardware that Parallel's hasn't done - yet!

Virtual appliances are a definite plus in vmware. When I get time I will look into seeing if I can get it working on my mac. First thing though is to get an e-sata drive hooked up so I am backed up before I go exploring this.
I will be in a wonderful place once I get my virtual worlds lined up. I have some old Visionneer sheet fed scanners that run great on win98 that I would seriously consider implementing using the appliance route. Then I could extend the life of my scanner and just drop the results from one virtual world to another :D
