Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variable

    The form is based on the set with table2 linked to mama 1:1. Table2 contains the Lastname, Firstname and SSN fields as well as the corresponding. I'm trying to get the following code to work but keep getting the error message that Lastname is not found. I added the table2 name (Clients) so:

    CASE find_by.value = "Clients->Lastname"

    The variables Find_By and What_Value are also defined as Global variables on the form.

    I also tried:

    parentform.index_set("Last_Name")

    Here's the code:

    SELECT

    CASE find_by.value = "Lastname"
    Data_Entry.index_set("Last_Name")

    CASE find_by.value = "Firstname"
    Data_Entry.index_set("First_Name")

    CASE find_by.value = "Ssnumber"
    Data_Entry.index_set("Ssn")

    end SELECT
    Data_Entry.commit()
    Data_Entry.find(what_value)

    Kenn

    I see a couple things.
    CASE find_by.value = "Clients->Lastname"
    Putting quotes around this is telling the the equation to look for the literal character string of "Clients->Lastname" and not the field. That being said I think the order of the equation is reversed.

    Try

    CASE clients->Lastname = find_by.value

    Although I never write it that way. I would use:

    CASE Clients->Lastname=find_by or CASE Clients->Lastname=var->find_by

    Regards,

    Jeff

      Re: Variable

      Either one of these should work:

      clients->Lastname = var->find_by

      Or:

      find_by= clients->Lastname

      Or:

      clients->Lastname =find_by.value 'if find_by is an object in the form.

      Or:

      lastname.value=find_by 'if lastname is an object

      Or:

      lastname.value=find_by.value 'if both are objects

      Or:

      clients ->lastname=var->find_by

      Or:

      find_by= clients ->lastname

      Or:

      find_by=lastname.value 'if lastname is an object

      Or:

      find_by.value=lastname.value 'if both are objects

      I thought they don't allow this kind of language on the board!

        Hi Jeff,

        The use of the " is straight out of A5 Help. I tried both suggestions; find_by.value was not found

        and

        var->find_by ended up with No such field.

        Thanks for your response; I'm off to Gab's suggestions.

          G's suggestions are what I suggested (with a lot of variations).

          BTW, thanks for the all the examples there G. I learned some stuff from them.

          Regards,

          Jeff

            I interpret from this that table2 is the child. If so it seems that you are trying to set an index for a child table using .Index_set(). I am reasonably sure that .Index_set only works on the primary table of the set. ie the parent. You could try topparent.QuickSortExplicit("Lastname")

              Hi Tim,

              You are correct. I went through every suggestion Gabe suggested. None worked, not because what Gabe suggested was wrong but brcause you are correct.

              I did a work around by:
              1. Adding the Lastname and Firstname field to Table1.
              2. Creating a set for entering data to include Table2 as the parent and Table1 as the child (son or daughter, Gabe's choice :D)
              3. I then linked the 1:Many using a unique number, Lastname and Firstname. The unique # is really all that is needed but I included the others just to populate the fields in the new Table2.

              Now, I can go back to the previous set and us the progressive lookups and variables as needed.

              Thanks for your input. A special Thank You to Gabe for the numerous ways to get the job done.
