Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Case Statement with Multiple Conditions

    Everyone was such a help on my last problem, that I have another one to throw out at you.

    I'm having a problem creating a case (or an "if") statement that says the following:

    If "Difference" = 1-9, then 80

    If "Difference" = 10-19, then 90

    If "Difference" = 20-29, then 160

    If "Difference" = 30-39, then 530

    If "Difference" >40, then 530

    (* This is a fine list for speeding offenses, and all are numeric fields.)

    This is what I came up with:

    case( DIFFERENCE <10,80,DIFFERENCE<>10-19,90,DIFFERENCE<>20-29,160,DIFFERENCE<>30-39,290,DIFFERENCE>40,530)

    and it works for speeds less than 10 or between 10 and 19, but above 19, the end result stays at 90.

    (Now that I think about it, maybe an "if" statement would be better, with a "result false" answer of "0")

    Case is fine if constructed correctly. I'm not sure what

    DIFFERENCE<>10-19 means to you but to Alpha it means

    DIFFERENCE<>(10-19) or DIFFERENCE<>-9

    I think you want

    case( DIFFERENCE <10,80,between(DIFFERENCE,10,19),90,between(DIFFERENCE,20,29),160,between(DIFFERENCE,30,39),290,DIFFERENCE>=40,530)

    All the intermediate expressions yield

    DIFFERENCE<>-9
    There can be only one.

      Rich

      Give this a try
      Code:
      case( vAmountover <10,80,vAmountover >=10 .and. vAmountover<=19,90,vAmountover >= 20 .and. vAmountover<= 29,160,vAmountover<>30-39,290,vAmountover>40,530)
      I removed Difference because it is a function name in Alpha.

      It returns the following:

      Code:
      vamountover=25
      ? case( vAmountover <10,80,vAmountover >=10 .and. vAmountover<=19,90,vAmountover >= 20 .and. vAmountover<= 29,160,vAmountover<>30-39,290,vAmountover>40,530)
      = 160
      Regards,

      Jeff

        Jeff,

        I think you missed converting

        vAmountover<>30-39

        to

        vAmountover>=30.and. vAmountover<=39
        There can be only one.

          Hi Jeff

          I didn't realize the word "Difference" was used in the A5 program, so I changed it slightly to "vDifference." As such, I used your formula, and everything works fine except for speeds above 40 Mph. For those, the fine is staying at 290, although I don't know why.

          Here's what I have now:

          CASE( VDIFFERENCE <10,80,VDIFFERENCE >=10 .AND. VDIFFERENCE<=19,90,VDIFFERENCE >= 20 .AND. VDIFFERENCE<= 29,160,VDIFFERENCE<>30-39,290,VDIFFERENCE >40,530)

            Hi Rich

            This should do it.

            Code:
            CASE(VDIFFERENCE <10,80,VDIFFERENCE >=10 .AND. VDIFFERENCE<=19,90,VDIFFERENCE >= 20 .AND. VDIFFERENCE<= 29,160,VDIFFERENCE>=30 .and. vdifference<=39,290,VDIFFERENCE >40,530)
            Stan: Thanks. I had missed that.

            BTW, Rich I didn't know Difference was a function name either until I started typing it into the interactive window and Alpha was showing the auto complete info for the function. That's what tipped me off.

            Regards,

            Jeff

                Simplify:
                case(vDifference<10,80,vDifference<20,90,vDifference<30,160,.t.,530)

                  Re: Case Statement with Multiple Conditions

                  You said:
                  Simplify:
                  case(vDifference<10,80,vDifference<20,90,vDifference<30,160,.t.,530)

                  But how would the system know what the correct fine was for say "8 Miles over the limit?" 8 is not only under 10, but is also under 20, under 30, etc.

                  In other words, how does it know that a speed is for example, "under 20, but over 9?" Wouldn't it need the "<>10-19" expression to identify it?

                    Re: Case Statement with Multiple Conditions

                    Ahh!.. I thought you might ask.

                    case() runs from left to right and stops after it finds the first true statment.
                    So, when it evaluates 8, the first true statment is <10, all others do not even come in the picture.

                    Code:
                    dim vdifference as n
                    vdifference=8
                    ?case(vDifference<10,80,vDifference<20,90,vDifference<30,160,.t.,530)
                    = 80

                    vdifference=19
                    ?case(vDifference<10,80,vDifference<20,90,vDifference<30,160,.t.,530)
                    = 90
                    and so on..
