Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reports - Printing rows horizontally

    Hello all,

    Has someone figured out how records can be listed horizontally instead of vertically?

    I need to list a product line, say shoes. My typical report should read like this:

    Style# Sizes
    12185 10.0 10.5 11.0 11.5 12.0 12.5 13.0 13.5 14.0 14.5
    12195 14.0 14.5 15.0 15.5 16.0 16.5
    12200 18.0 18.5 19.0 19.5 20.0

    But this is how Alpha would print

    Style# Sizes
    12185 10.0
    10.5
    11.0
    11.5.... and so on

    I believe that Alpha can print in a newspaper like column but not across but that does not help whatsoever

    Any way around this?

    Mickey.

    I had asked a similar question a few months ago and did get one suggestion only from one person--maybe use subreports and calc fields.

    I am hoping someone will come up with an easy way also...If the attached picture is what you are thinking of it takes quite a bit of time...I used 12 subreports side by side and a "Ton" of calc fields!

      Reports - Printing rows horizontally

      Thanks Mike,

      I have tried something similar to what you have suggested but the limits on the number of calculated fields allowed on a table and/or report is returning error message in the derivation even though it is correct

      I've been spoilt by a software I've used in the past which is too primitive to be named here and its only feature I loved was its details handling by a command:

      .items across 5 wide 30

      The above command would create 5 columns, each 30 characters wide

      Perhaps Selwyn Rabins canuse his magic and bless us with this function!

        Re: Reports - Printing rows horizontally

        Hi Mickey,

        The best solution to your problem is to create a function Global UDF to generate each line of code that you want. It may be the Global UDF would return a record value to display or blank, when you passed it a column. Then your detail line would have 10 or so calculated fields placed across the line that would return a value for that position.

        the calculated field line with function call would probably be something like this

        Column1=getrecordcolumn(1,rowlink)
        Column2=getrecordcolumn(2,rowlink)
        ...
        Column9=getrecordcolumn(9,rowlink)

        the getrecordcolumn() function would be passed the desired column to calculate and the data required to find the current row's records (e.g. style #). It would then have to process and return the correct data. As to what to do if the data exceeds a planned on number of columns, is another question to resolve, but it may not apply to you.

        Another way to do this that is kind of similar is to use a crosstab operation and display the results of the crosstab.

          Thank you Ira!

          I reviewed Alpha's help on crosstab and believe I may have a solution.

          Certainly appreciately your input and will revert back with results of my trials

            Would this do?

            For the sizes use a calculated field that uses table.external_record_content_get() to gather the values. Then add a function to change the resulting list to one line. crlf_to_comma() if you want commas therein or strtran() to use a seperator of your fancy. The report in the attached example uses:
            SizeList=
            Code:
            strtran(table.external_record_content_get("products","alltrim(Size)","val(size)","Style="+quote(Style.value)),crlf()," ")
            The report is filtered for Product type of "Shoe" and grouped on 'type'. The detail section has been turned off and the SizeList calc placed in the group section.
