Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Addin a new field

    Hello,

We have just converted to a5v8 from a5v5. Other than some minor coding fixes it seems to be going fairly well. But, I just ran into a problem. I tried to add 3 new fields to a table and got the following error message:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. q:\alf55\$$2B0700.dbf"

I kicked everyone off of their computers, deleted the temp files, restarted the server and tried again. Got the same error message just with a different $$.dbf temp file name.

Does anyone have any ideas on this as we obviously need the ability to add new fields? This is a critical issue for us.

    Thank you,
    Dave

    Dave,

Did you delete the *.muf files & *.rmuf files? These are where Alpha does it sharing, and may be the issue. You can delete them without issue if no one is in Alpha 5. If you had any forms, browses or other layouts and windows referencing the table, that would give you the error you are seeing as well.

      1-As usual, compact first..
      2-Type this in your IW:
      a5_close_all_windows()
3-If that does not do it, close and re-open alpha

        Re: Addin a new field

I didn't delete those files because I've never had to do that in the past but will try with this version. Do I delete all of those files? I do have browses, forms, etc. associated with this table but none were open. Will anything happen to them by deleting those files?

Also, I just did a db compact. And since no-one was in the system since I kicked them all out as well as rebooted the server, it wouldn't be possible for any alpha files to be open other than when I opened the database back up to add fields myself.

Mr. Gabriel, I'm not familiar as to where to put the a5_close_all_windows() code. Could you help me out with that?

Here's the kicker, the two times I've tried to add the fields today, it's bogged down my server so much that I've had to reboot it. This doesn't fair to well with the users so I may have to try another time.

        Thanks,
        Dave

          where to put the a5_close_all_windows()
Type it in the Interactive Window and press Enter.

            Re: Addin a new field

You can delete any MUF/RMUF files that windows allows you to delete (exit Alpha 5 frees them up). They are only temporary and Alpha will recreate them.

                Re: Addin a new field

Still no luck. Here's what I did.

                1. Did a database compact
                2. Deleted the *.muf & *.rmuf files
                3. Ran a5_close_all_windows() in iw

                I got this error message:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. q:\alf55\$$312400.dbf"

I tried it twice. I can do it successfully on a copy of our database on my hard drive but not on the live one which is on the network. In this case q is a drive on our our network.

Please help as this would be a deal breaker for us using a5v8. And we've spent a lot of money and time on it already.

                Thank you,

                Dave

                  David:
                  Back up your DB
                  Delete q:\alf55\$$312400.dbf" with Windows Explorer.

                    As a short term fix...

Get everyone out of the networked database.
copy the table and its support files to your hard drive
                    add the fields there
copy them back to the networked drive
                    There can be only one.

                      Re: Addin a new field

I deleted all those $$.* files already. They get re-created everytime. There was only one *.muf file that I couldn't delete. The database opens to a form. So, I close out of the form and run the a5_close etc. script. It still won't let me delete the *.muf file that associated with the database. So, I changed the setting so the database doesn't open up to that form. Same result, can't delete that *.muf file

Do you think this is some sort of bug??

                      Thanks,
                      Dave

                        Hi Dave,

Let me reiterate. Delete the $$ files and muf from Windows when not in Alpha 5!

Do you have any scripts that executes on startup?

                            Ira,

That's what I did. I closed out of alpha and deleted all those files. Then when I open it back up again, that one *.muf file gets created.

And no, I don't have any scripts that run on startup. I've attached a couple of screen shots.

                            Thanks,
