Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Until the 2 gig limit is reached, yes.
    2. Does alpha have any plans to enable that file to grow past 2gb?
    Dave
Not an Alpha issue, directly. The limit is imposed by the .dbf file specification. Not something Alpha can change.
    There can be only one.

I do have a couple more questions regarding it though.

      1. If no new fields are added, will the table work ok and be able to accept more records?
For a while, until you hit the exact size limit.

No - not within dbfs.. It's one of many reasons that other databases are supported via Alpha DAO.

It will not work when the file reaches 2 gigabyte (however that is defined - I'm not sure if that's a power of 2 or power of 10, but most likely a power of 2, in other words 2,147,483,647 bytes)

It's a limitation of the dbf format (Windows also has file size limitations as well depending upon the Window's version and hard drive's partition format). 100% guarantee that it will not change.

Short of changing to an SQL or ODBC access of another database format, that's the only answer for the DBF format.

          Re: Addin a new field

So, I'd basically have to set up this table in sql and then import it into our database here for it to continue working?

Else, I'd had to either parse out the table or remove records like I stated earlier?

            Re: Addin a new field

I don't know if this is true in your case, but usually with a file that size, there are several years worth of data that are not really necessary for the everyday use of the adb.

my approach is to have mirror tables/sets that I regularly move unnecessary records to. Then when the user searches, they can alternately search in the archives, and if necessary reinstate(move back) any given record.

In your case, if I am right on here, you would have a mirror for every unnecessay year, to prevent any of the table from reaching that size.

There will also likely be a tremendous increase in performance with fewer records.

If it stays in SQL you can use it from Alpha 5, but only via XBasic for Version 8 and earlier. On the Web Server, you can access SQL easily.

If you import to DBF format, the limitation is always 2 GB per file (not per table)

Yes. Unless you are removing a very large percentage of records, separate the table, as you will always end up hitting the maximum file size.

                Re: Addin a new field

Okay, thanks for all of your help.

I think the best course for us right now would be to move a large number of records to an archive table for reference.

                Again, thank you,

                Dave
