Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I'll try it. Can I run that to delete the *.muf file as well? I have to leave now but I'll try it next week again.

      Thanks for all your help.

        Re: Addin a new field

No, regardless of what I do, I can't remove that last *.muf file. Which means that I can't add new fields to the table.

The file is called: Database (1) for Ind.MUF

The database is called: Database (1) for Ind.adb

Have any of you run into this issue before?

        Thanks,

          Re: Addin a new field

try this - on the server rename the application folder to "appfoldername-sav"

make a new folder with the original name

copy the contents of the sav to the new folder - any files that are open in the sav will not be open in the new

I don't know if this will fix your situation, but its a technique we use for one of my apps when we have a similar issue.

I would also reboot the workstation you try this from, before retrying.

            Re: Addin a new field

            Dave,

Every time you start a database, a ".muf" (or ".rmuf" for runtime) file get's created for that database. If things work OK, the file get's deleted when you exit Alpha 5. If it still exists, it is normally OK.

However, if the muf file get's corrupted, it can hold locks on a file. It can not, however hold the locks if Alpha 5 is not open or exit's normally (not a crash). So, if you are still having problems deleting the file, it means that either someone else (same or different computer) also has that file open in shared mode, or, it has a read-only file attribute set (change to read/write and then retry if that's the case), or it's something else.

If it's something else, it means it could really be another program (Alpha 5, possibly a backup program etc) could be open on another station, or the server (where the file is) has a lock that was never released. Rebooting the server should free it.

Finally, it could be a corruption in the database. My recommendation is to create a new database in the same directory, then add the same tables to it and see if the problem persists.

              Re: Addin a new field

I've all of your suggestions this morning to no avail. I did try it on a backup which is on the network as well and it worked. So, Ira got me to thinking about rights etc. The backup had no rights associated with it. I looked at the folder where the live app is and removed a lot of unnecessary users who had rights to it. I'm going to try it again today and see how it goes.

              Thanks,
              Dave

Still no luck. I've done just about everything I can think of. This shouldn't be this hard. Don't know if the guys at alpha tightened up the new version to much or what.

Everytime after I close out of alpha after unsuccessfully adding new fields, I get the attached error message.

Please continue with any advice you may have.

                Thank you,

                  Hi Dave,

See if you can modify AlphaSports or 1 of the other sample databases and
add fields. If you can, try creating a new database on the local drive and table and see if you have a problem adding fields. Next repeat on the server.

Assuming these all work, it may be an issue in the automatic conversion from A5V5 to A5v8.

                    Ira,

I tried all of that just now and have no problems adding new fields. Is this a possible bug??

                      Re: Addin a new field

                      Hi Dave,

I think it's premature to call anything a bug, when you haven't really isolated steps that reproduce the problem. But since you said you converted from A5v5 to A5v8, there could be conversion issues that might crop up (although, anything from, v4 to v8 i found to be pretty much upward compatible except for arrays requiring brackets now instead of allowing parenthesis.

So The next step is to try it with a5v5 and see if you can add fields. Is it just to one table, or all tables of that database? If it is 1 table, try deleting (after a backup) and recreating it. Does it still have problems? Now append your data. A corrupted table dbf file could cause problems with certain field types (e.g. if the letter "A" was in a numeric field). If it appends alright, then try it again.
                      Regards,

                        Ira,

I can add fields in a5v5. We've used it for 5 years. I'll test and see if it's just the one table that I'm having the trouble with.

                          Re: Addin a new field

See if you can create a new table in your DB, then after adding the table see if you can go back and add a field. If you can do this outside the server I am guessing it has to do with record locking or rights.

                            Re: Addin a new field

I'm back. Still no luck. I have narrowed it down to this one particular table though. I can add fields to other tables without a problem. In testing, I duplicated the table with the indexes and field rules but no records. Then I successfully added a new field.

I then appended all the records into that new table and tried to add a field again. No luck.

So, what are my option do you think? Does it have something to do with record locking or rights?

                            Thanks,
                            Dave

                              Dave

You have some invalid data in the table.

Open a default browse, sort each column ascending, then descending.

One or more of the columns will show bad data at the top of the list. At least it usually shows at the top...

Otherwise do the divide and conquer. Append half of the data into a new table and try the new field. Keep working it until you narrow it down to one or a group of records.

Some of your data is from A4 or older... It's easy to get something out of wack from the old days.....

Thanks Al. I'll try one of the options. It's our largest table with around 300 fields and over 140k records.
