Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Evaluate_template Array not working

    My syntax is clearly wrong here:
    Code:
    TOM = table.openmap(vTable,vField1 + "," + vDataField1 + "," + vDataField2 + "," + vDataField3)
    Dim Array[vSize] as P
    Array.initialize_from_table(TOM,vFilter,vField1)
    FOR i = 1 TO vSize
        FOR m = 1 TO vNoItems
            vDataHeight = evaluate_template("(vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m + ")/yMax")

    From the interactive editor, I get this:
    Code:
    evaluate_template("(vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m)
    = Script:TEMPLATE line:1
    All the variables are properly defined and have values. What's wrong?

    Do you want

    Code:
    evaluate_template("vDataHeight = (vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m + ")/yMax")
    or

    Code:
    vDataHeight = eval("(vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m + ")/yMax")
    There can be only one.

      Re: Evaluate_template Array not working

      Sorry, my typo

      The 2nd code should have been:
      Code:
      ?evaluate_template("Array[" + i + "]" + "vDataField" + m)
      = Script:TEMPLATE line:1
      I was trying to show that the array variable was not processing within evaluate template. Although this does:
      Code:
      Array[3].costs
      = 563571
      So, ultimately I want this to work:
      Code:
      vDataHeight = evaluate_template("(vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m + ")/yMax")

        Re: Evaluate_template Array not working

        Peter,

        I was trying to illustrate that if you are doing the assignment "outside" of the evaluation, I think you want eval() instead of evaluate_template().

        Code:
        i = 5
        ABC5 = 27

        ? eval("ABC"+i)
        = 27
        On the other hand if you want to do the assignment within the evaluation...

        Code:
        evaluate_template("ABC"+i+"=99")
        ? ABC5
        = 99
        Might be easier to explain with simple substitution as

        Code:
        i = 1
        m = 1
        ? ("(vData * Array[" + i + "].vDataField" + m + ")/yMax")
        = "(vData * Array[1].vDataField1)/yMax"
        I don't think

        "(vData * Array[1].vDataField1)/yMax"

        is a suitable xbasic code line to feed to evaluate_template().
        EVALUATE_TEMPLATE() executes the Xbasic code specified by Expression.
        There can be only one.

            I guess the problem is still:

            Code:
            ?eval("vArray[" + i + "].vDataField" + m)
            ERROR: Property not found
            vArray[] not found.
            The eval won't evaluate.

              Peter in your last post you are trying to concatenate string and numeric data types.

              Try this:

              Code:
              i = 1
              dim vArray[4] as P
              vArray[1].vDataField = "Test"
              ?eval("vArray[" + ltrim(str(i)) +"].vDatafield")
              = "Test"

                Re: Evaluate_template Array not working

                Tom, I don't think that addresses my problem. Notice that vDatafield + m is a variable with a field name dynamically assigned.

                vDataField1 = "costs" 'a field name, as an example.

                  When did vArray arrive?

                  Previous snippets don't mention it.

                  It does look like we forgot to handle vDatafield though.

                  ? eval("Array[" + i + "]."+vDataField + m)

                  Code:
                  vdata = 8
                  vdatafield = "costs"
                  i = 1
                  m = 1

                    Re: Evaluate_template Array not working

                    The string you pass to Eval() cannot contain numerics.

                    Code:
                    dim i as N
                    dim m as N
                    i = 1
                    m = 1
                    dim vArray[4] as P
                    vArray[1].vdatafield1 = "Test"
                    ?eval("vArray["+ltrim(str(i))+"].vdatafield"+ltrim(str(m)))
                    = "Test"
