Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Will the real Alpha Web Server stand up!!

I have installed WAS on my dedicated Windows 2003 server.
I have also installed AlwaysUp per recommendation from this board.

I am confused as to what is running what? I have told A5 to work with port 82 and that is fine. The problem is I can not really figure out when the A5server is actually up and running.

By this I mean, I check on my server using Task Manager and it shows under Processes that :

A5ApplicationServer.exe is running and its user's name is "SYSTEM".

With this configuration alone I can not access an A5 page from a remote machine.

However, when I log onto server and start A5 server from the "start" menu, another occurance of :

A5ApplicationServer.exe is created (in task manager) and it says it's user name is "ADMINSTRATOR"

Now with this configuration, I can access my test page, and all seems okay.

I can't figure out what occurance of WAS is AlwaysUp trying to keep running (IF ANY). In fact AlwaysUP can state that the server is running but I see no A5 icon in the task bar. Only when I start A5 manually do I get the icon and the lite is green, and my app can then run.

Can someone help with this confusion?

If you make your connection to the remote server using remote desktop, use this syntax to start remote desktop:

    %SystemRoot%\System32\mstsc.exe /console

The 'console' is the key. It opens as if you were sitting in front. Without that, its like logging in with a different account.

AlwaysUp has a setting under the LogOn tab to change the user, but you should not need to do that if you follow the above instructions.

Credit goes to "Gary" for discovering this while we were working on his machine.

      Steve,

Unfortunately you may be assuming I know more than I do. I will therefore ask several "pointed" questions that may lead to some success on this issue.
If you could address each issue, point by point I think it'll act as a learning tool for not only me but for others that may end up facing the same delima.

      1. I have added the /console to my Remote Desktop setup, yet when I get to the remote server's desktop, I see no noticible difference. Should I be able to see something (anything) different at this point? I could "always" see the desktop.

      2. I am STILL using administrator as my user name to log in. Changing it to "system" does not allow me to advance. Do you want me to actually change my User Login name when prompted by remote server?

      3. As stated earlier:

"when I log onto server and start A5 server from the "start" menu, another occurance of :

A5ApplicationServer.exe is created (in task manager) and it says it's user name is "ADMINSTRATOR"

When I refer to access, I am referring to access from the "outside world". Not as an administrator user on this specific machine.

      4. If needed, how can I "kill" the "system" occurance of WAS and have AlwaysUp start the Administrator's version (since that works). I could find no logon/user tab in AlwaysUp as suggested. I want to do the "right thing". Please do not allow my insistance on painting myself into a bad corner.

      5. Even though you gave me a viable solution that may work for most people, could you expand your thoughts (a little more) on what you think was actually taking place.

It is a question of permissions. Administrator has permission to execute the Alpha web server. That is why your page is visible when you login via RDC and start the WAS "manually." You are starting it as Administrator (it is also why the WAS stops if you logoff)

Similarly for AlwaysUp to run the web server, AlwaysUp must be logged on as Administrator. Use the LOGON tab in AllwaysUp to set the credentials to Administrator and the relevant password.

See the attached graphic for the Logon tab in AlwaysUp.

Note - I have A5 running as "System" on three servers with no problem. I would bet that no one else has changed this to run as Admin. But if your's appears to work only if your are in as Admin, I can't help but believe changing AlwaysUp to Admin will help. One thing, if you specifically click the Start > Log off button, when you go back using RDC, you will not see the A5 icon. I just click the X to close remote desktop.

            Steve,

With your help and that of ZebraHost I was able to piece together a better understanding of my situation. I believe the matter is resolved at this point.

            Thanks.

I went into AlwaysUp and told it to use Administrator as the user. Previously it was set up to use "system" and that was not allowing the outside world to recognize port 82 as being serviced by Alpha's Web Server.

Also, I needed to use the task manager on the server to "eliminate" the several occurances of WAS that it seemed to want to keep initializing. I had to use END TASK under the PROCESS tab to do this. It took several trys because AlwaysUp (I guess) kept restarting the server (WAS).

A couple of strange things I noticed.
                * AlwaysUp would allow more than one of it's runtime engines to run at the same time. Seems to me that this program should realize that it is already running and then "pop" you over to the active occurance. For years I've been doing this in my own utility software and can't figure out why they would allow multiple runs of the same software.

                * Second, why isn't the Alpha WAS smart enough to know how to keep itself running on the server. In other words, why do I have to purchase another piece of software to do what the original should be able to do "on its own". If nothing else, the WAS should contain a utility like "AlwaysUp" that comes standard and is automatically installed when installing the WAS on a remote server.
