Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Example of web-based event calendar

There was some discussion recently about calendars in Alpha web apps. I am just finishing up an application that uses a calendar to show events. It has hyperlinks for each event that open to a Detail dialog. In this case the events are maintained on the Desktop copy of Alpha, operating as a Hybrid web/desktop application.

Here is a link to the draft website:

I cannot take credit for the basic design. The code and concept comes from Peter Wayne, author of Xbasic for Everyone. I modified it from his examples.

Now that is sharp, and just what many of us have been looking for.

Steve, it looks like you'll have another "product" to offer other developers. (For a fee of course.)

          Very nice Steve.

I've been studying Adobe's Flex product for the past couple of weeks and I thought you all might be interested in the capabilities that Flex offers in relation to calendars.

This is a proof of concept example that is quite impressive, Flex calendar demo

To take what Rich mentioned a step further.

I would definitely be interested in buying this from you should you decide it "package" it up as a web add-on. You can count me as a confirmed "would purchase this product".:)

            Once again, great job.

Re: Example of web-based event calendar

Well, like I said below, it's Peter's Wayne's code and concept pulled from his Xbasic for Everyone book; I modified to suit my needs. I would have to check with him to see what arrangements we could make.

Depending on your need, you may like the original out-of-the-book version better. So it would make sense to show that version side-by-side and for me to ask Peter if his original calendar code can be included for purchase.

Two options I plan to add to my rendition are 1) the ability to span days for events that have a start and stop time that spans days, 2) the option to use graphic objects to represent individual events on the calendar. Objects are nice because they can have a longer 'alt' description of the event that appears when you mouse over the object.

Peter gave me the go-ahead. So how about those interested describe what other features you might want before I whip up something deliverable.

                  Steve,

Thanks for asking. I can think of two things that would make this more complicated (I mean useful).

The first is multiple calendars. An organization might have, for example, a conference room calendar, a presentation calendar, and a delivery calendar. So, can you add a dropdown at the top to let you choose which calendar you want to see?

The second is a companion resource view. That is, a school might have a class schedule where classes are scheduled into rooms. So one view is the calendar by day, and the companion view is the calendar by room.

Re: Example of web-based event calendar

Those two items are already incorporated. If you look at the example, it has a Category dropdown in the upper left. The dropdown feeds a filter, which determines what "calendar" shows. If you take that back one step, the filter could be provided at several levels, so a calendar might have that dropdown, or a single filter could be provided at page level, with no dropdown, or it could be based on parameters from Login.

Taking it farther, if Steve Wood was logged in, just his calendar might show (based on login parameters), or Steve's whole Department calendar might show. All of that depends on how you categorize or flag the event when it is first entered in to the calendar.dbf table.

If you look at the example, almost all lists of data (not just the graphic calendar) on the Dashboard and the Schedule page are from the same calendar.dbf table, just different views.

                      Hi Steve

I can't really think of anything I would add/change at this point. I really like it.

I am curious as to how you envision this being implemented? That is, I am COMPLETELY new to writing web stuff and am just trying to get my brain wrapped around how to do things.

Just a couple of newbie questions....

                      1. How does this get put on a page?
                      2. Is it a function call?
                      3. Is it a user-created web component (I don't know if there is such a thing though)?
                      4. Will there need to be a calendar.dbf file or is it possible to to pass the name of the table where the info resides as well as the date field and appt description field? Either way is good for me, more curiosity than anything on this item?

                      Regards,

                      Jeff

Being a relative newbie myself I suggest you try out a few web server tutorials first, all your questions should be answered as this and creating a few test web components and pages with Alpha 5 should give you an idea of the structure of how WAS deals with putting components into pages etc.

                          Hi Andrea

I guess I should have mentioned that I would have no problem implementing this on the desktop side.

I have been through several of the web tutorials. Maybe I am more dense than most, but I don't see how those answer my questions. I have created a small sample sample web app that utilizes most of the standard components available, I am still however unsure how Steve will have us implement his web calendar.

I would assume you would be able to download/buy the web app components alongside the relevant tables and insert into a web page just like normal components?
