Default View MS Word document within control on form?

I wish to build a document management system whereby a user can search for documents based on preassigned categories and have a browse list all of the documents in that particular category. Next the user would click on the record in the browse and a control, on the same form as the browse, would display the document so the user could "preview" the document to tell if that is the one they want and then have a button to open the selected document in an instance of MS Word 2007 for editing. Is there a control in A5v7 that will display a MS Word 2007 document? Is the above description doable?

    Thanks,
    TD

Not sure what you mean by "preview".

Alpha has a sys_open() method which will open a named document with the associated application. A browse has an onrowdblclick event which can be used to open a document based on the contents of a field.

IOW what you want is doable and easily done if you can get over the preview barrier.

Hi Stan. I don't want the user opening one to who knows how many instances of MS Word just to view a document to determine if it is the one they were looking for. In MS Access you can view a Word document within a OLE Object frame control that is on a Access form. Was wondering if A5v7 had a control that would do the same thing.

    Thanks,

Put an OLE object on the form to open MS Word.

Alpha has no control type to do this and from the lack of mention of it over the years I believe it be something fairly specialized. Alpha does have the capability to incorporate activex objects on forms.

Here's a link to an activex that seems to offer what you want.

Reading further that may not be what you asked for since it seems to pertain to excel. At first I thought it was for any office document. Back to Google.

    This looks more like it.

    TD,

If this is not doable as originally wanted why not have a separate table with all of the documents copied into their own memo field as text? These could be called upon as the preview and then when the one that is wanted is found sys_open() could be used for the actual Word Doc.

Hi Mike. That would work except most of these Word doc's are forms made in Word using Word tables.

I've been looking at third party activeX (ocx) controls. Does anybody know if just any old activex control work with A5v7?

    Thanks,
    TD
