Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Unknown error shuts down WAS

We are having memory issues as well with A5V8 apps and WAS V8, but not on SSL.
2 very small community service apps being hosted by us on an old Gateway.
The apps get very few hits (4 - 8 / day).
I watch the A5ApplicationServer.exe file grow about 10 megs per day and restart the WAS when usage gets too high. It was sitting at 1.99 GB when I noticed the issue, but didn't have any errors pop up.

Not a big deal to these apps but it wouldn't be good for busy ones.

My application is written in V8 and hosted with WAS V8. Our server is hosted in house on a Windows 2003 Server with a Xeon 3GHz processor and 2GB of ram. As noted earlier in the thread, coincidence or not, the leak seemed to appear when we switched to SSL.

        Thanks, Paul

Re: Unknown error shuts down WAS

To add more info to this discussion:

I have 4 customers that run an event manager application that has both an SSL and a non-SSL portion, so on their sites they run two instances of the WAS, one for the non-ssl pages and one for the SSL pages.

From time to time, all these sites have trouble with the WAS hanging or shutting itself down, and when it happens, it is always on the SSL side.

The non-ssl side gets more traffic (judging by the access logs, by a factor of about 100 times) but the trouble is always with SSL. I can't find anything in the access logs or the error logs to indicate the reason (it's mostly a long series of don't have security rights and can't find robots.txt messages)

Unfortunately, when the errors occur, it's when an event is aproaching and the volume is highest and the need to run is the greatest, so there is never any time to try to research the cause...I've gotta get the app running again. None of these sites use AlwaysUp.

My other customers who run only one instance (non SSL) never seem to have this problem...the WAS runs error free (except of course for the occasional coding error!)

We take the reliability of the Application Server incredibly seriously. Unfortunately, we have never been able to reproduce this problem in any of our stress testing.

If someone can send us a copy of their application and a raw log leading up to the large memory increase, we can "replay" it here. If we can duplicate a problem, we can fix it.

                Richard,

All these sites are Version 8. They are hosted by ZebraHost, but it's not a hosting problem because the troublefree sites are also hosted there.

Clive has worked very hard to try to help me identify the problems and to get the sites back up when they hang.

                  Afternoon

Are you still looking for a sample WAS db to show the increasing use of memory?

If so, I will send ours over to you

Yes Duane, we are still waiting to receive an application and accompanying raw log to duplicate this problem.

Re: Unknown error shuts down WAS

As I was developing in V8 with a local V8 server running I was stopped short with this message:

Access Violation - thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address - doesn't have appropriate access. A5 will do a forced termination.

Though the scenario is a bit different from the others, I thought it might be of interest.

Re: Unknown error shuts down WAS

Hi Gary, I was wondering if you had managed to resolve this issue? I have posted the same item in the V9 Desktop section but have had zero responses to date. I notice from the Message Board that it has been occuring at least since 2002!

In my case, it should be easier to get to the bottom of the problem as I only have four users on an MS2003 SBS accessing a Desktop V9 application, where two users have the error and the other two function perfectly. The two that experience the error have it after amending just 2 to 8 records, which is obviously a major issue to the user. We are currently trying to find the difference in the setup of the four PC's, which will then hopefully lead us to the problem.

My hunch is that it is a memory issue on the PC's, but I don't really know - any help would be greatly appreciated

                          Kind regards
                          Larry Gordon

                            Larry...
I have had it confirmed by Alpha that the memory leak does exist and that they hope to get it fixed. That was many weeks ago and I do not know the current status. What I have done to stop the problem is that I use Always Up and have it restart Alpha each night at midnight. I have only had two occasions in the last couple of months where the application page cannot be found when someone clicks on the link, but when I go to the server everything appears to be working fine and the application is running with no error messages showing. As soon as I restart A5WAS it bring everything back online. Sure hope they resolve this soon.

To answer Richard's question - I am in Version 9 and i'm starting to have my clients call with this error as well... (they are in runtime V9)

It is random, not on any particular form or function..and new for me

What information can i send to help you find the problem - or has it been resolved now?
