Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hello Steve.
    Thanks for your response.
    As you advised, I removed the code from the A5W page. I then removed the 'if'... 'endif', and placed it in the 'After Validate'. It now works perfectly. Many thanks indeed.
    Is there a publication that I can buy that will give me some further tutorial, or do I have to rely on the Forum members' help?
    Regards.

      Hi Nick,
      There are some books available from Intellectual Business Solutions covering Alpha Five and one of them is on Building Web Applications, Level 1 ($75US)which makes me think there is probably a Level 2 coming in the future. I purchased their 4 book bundle which was the cheapest way to go considering I had to pay freight to Australia.

        Nick, I forgot to mention that Alpha Five Made Easy from Liberty Manuals has a chapter on The Web Application Server (Chapter 12) which is avalable for download for $19.95US. I dont know what level you are at as far as your expertise goes with Alpha but I'm new to Alpha and appreciate every piece of information I can get.

            Re: Web Project / App

            Could someone please tell me how to perform the following....

            In my web app I want to allow a user to enter a unique UserID number at the top of a form. On leaving the UserID field (or on 'clicking' a button), their details (name, address etc) will be populated to the form. These details are stored in table called 'client'.

            Thereafter the user completes the remainder of the form details, before 'submitting' the form details to the table 'order'.

            I imagined that this might be possible using Dialog, but I'm beginning to think this will need Gridlinker.

            Would really appreciate any help. Thanks as always.

            Nick.

              Re: Web Project / App

              You could use one or two dialogs. Case 1, use the first dialog to capture the UserID, and Submit would open the second dialog. Put the pseudocode I have below in the Initaliize event of the second dialog. Make the UserID scope=session.

              Case 2, one dialog. Put the UserID field first, and the rest of your fields below. Ask them to type in their UserID and press Submit IF they want their information on-file to populate. Put the pseudocodeI have below in the Activate event. Not sure if you need the UserID to be scope=session or if local will work. Disclaimer - I have not tried this second idea.

              In the below, my Acct field is your UserID field. You need an index on your UserID field.

              One thing: you need to add error checking for if the UserID is not valid. The code below would just return nothing to the form in that case.

              Code:
              if eval_valid("session.acct")
              	dim tbl as p
              	tbl=table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\user_validate")
              	tbl.index_primary_put("Acct")
              	if tbl.fetch_find(session.acct) > 0

              	CurrentForm.Controls.AccountNo.value 	= session.Acct

              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_company.value 	= alltrim(tbl.Company_name)
              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_Address1.value 	= alltrim(tbl.Address1)
              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_Address2.value	= alltrim(tbl.Address2)
              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_City.value		= alltrim(tbl.City)
              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_State.value		= alltrim(tbl.State)
              	CurrentForm.Controls.merch_Zipcode.value	= alltrim(tbl.Zipcode)
              	end if
              end if

                Hello Steve.

                Thank you for your help, and my apologies for the late response. I've been away.

                Sadly, I'm still struggling with a couple of things.........

                I've created a form for new users to register, and I am able to automatically enter new UserIDs and Passwords into the Users and Groups of the Web Security. However, for some reason I can't seem to populate the Group and External User ID Value fields.

                I also have a problem with your code above. I used Case 1, and have inserted the following code into the Initialize section of the form.

                if eval_valid("session.userid")
                dim tbl as p
                tbl=table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\client")
                tbl.index_primary_put("userid")
                if tbl.fetch_find(session.userid) > 0

                CurrentForm.Controls.userid.value = session.userid
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_name.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_name)
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_address1.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_address1)
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_city.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_city)
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_county.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_county)
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_postcode.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_postcode)
                CurrentForm.Controls.Client_email.value = alltrim(tbl.Client_email)
                end if
                end if

                I use the standard Login element, and then move the user to the page containing the above code, but this doesn't populate the form.

                Am I right in thinking that it may be that the UserID (input at the Login element) may no longer be valid on moving to the 2nd page.?

                I'm getting a bit of a headache here...

                Thanks.

                Nick.

                    Re: Web Project / App

                    Sorry, just saw this.

                    Using the login dialog, at least if you are using Security Framework, does not create a session variable name userid. If you are not using Security Framework, you could create an ad hoc login dialog where you could create session.userid if you created the userid control as scope Session.

                    If you created a ulink variable as a session variable, then why not search your user table based on ulink? Do you have a field to store your ulink in your users table? You'd need on if you plan to keep your Security Framework and user table in sync.
