Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Issues with WAS on a PDA

I am noticing that certain things do not display properly or at all on a PDA celll phone:

    - calendar controls do pop up but the numbers for days are missing from the calendar

    - lookup tables also do pop up, but the select link in the lookup table, does not work.

As far as the problem with lookup tables, I am inclined to use drop down boxes instead, as they work fine on a PDA - But, I do have a question about the drop down box. Is there an easy way to have the first line of the drop down be a blank line (I am using dynamic drop down) - otherwise, there does not seem to be any way for the user to leave that particular field blank.

ANy comments surely would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Laos, I forgot to mention, that the navigation system does not seem to work on a PDA. If the button has no sub-choices, it kind of works, but behaves strangely - i.e., when you click on that choice, the button highlights the text within and allows you to delete or edit it! but then does take the appropraite action thyat was specified in that button. If the button has choices under it, it does noty work at all, and the choices do not even pop up.

So, I am inclined not to use the naviagtion system, and instead use pages with hyperlinks.

Am I off the mark here??

Not just with with Alpha WAS, but in general... we have found that coding pages to be accessed by "mobile browsers," requires one to always code to the "lowest common denominator." That is, not all browsers that you will encounter on mobile devices will support all, or even most, of the features you have available when constructing your pages to be accessed by IE and other full-featured browsers.

Thank you both for your help. The | works great!!

And the reminder to KISS (keep it simple stupid) is appreciated. One question, though, do you have any way to use calendar functionality on the PDA so that user can select from a calendar to enter dates?

Re: Issues with WAS on a PDA

If you are building for a PDA, not only do you have to build for the screen size, but you can't use some common web features. Support for JavaScript and CSS style sheets in most browsers for PDA's is limited if it exists at all. Many web features in Alpha Five such as calendars, flyouts on menus, pop-up lookups, etc rely on Javascript and probably won't work on a PDA. Web components also use CSS style sheets for their colors and "look" and much of that formatting may be lost on some PDA's.

While some regular web pages may open and work on a PDA, many are written specifically for that medium by eliminating some features typically found on a web page designed for a browser on a computer. Some companies even have special web sites for PDA users. You can search the internet and finds lots of information about the limitations of PDA browsers and specific guidelines on building sites for portable devices.

One of the common operating systems for PDA's is Microsoft's Pocket Internet Explorer and later variants. They have a good explanation of the limitations of this browser here. Another good source about designing for PDA's is here.
