Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    nano second ticks

    I am connecting to a vendor database that is using some columns in their tables to represent time in nano second ticks.

    "Time values are measured in 100-nanosecond units called ticks, and a particular date is the number of ticks since 12:00 midnight, January 1, 0001 A.D."

    I need to be able to take a date and time from the user and query a table based on the above.

    Has anyone attempted this before?

    omar,

    Code:
    ? now()
    = 01/16/2008 12:14:13 58 am
    nanoseconds seems about four orders of magnitude more sensitive than the least increment Alpha works on. So, I haven't a clue how you might focus into an increment as narrow as that!

      Re: nano second ticks

      you could create a calculated field that converted the current time to nanoseconds, and subtract it from a constant, as long as it would fit in a 16 digit field

      reminds me of how Filemaker used to keep track of time

        Alpha Five's timer resolution is in microseconds:

        Code:
        dim x as util::timer
        'dim also starts the time
        x.Stop()
        ?x.ElapsedMicroseconds
        = 36176092

        ?x.ElapsedMilliseconds
        = 36176

        ?x.ElapsedSeconds
        = 36

          Thanks for the comments; Apparently this is some sort of .net and is easy for .net programmers...

          All I want to do is take a date range and query. Unfortunately, the so called dates are in this 64bit integer number that I just don't have time to figure out. Was looking for some sort of .dll or activex that I could call from Alpha...

            Hi,

            Maybe you could read that field into a blob. It will produce a 64 bit number. With some arithmetic peek and poke you can get two 32 bit values that you can handle.

            See also this info link and this and this.

              Try some of these test constructions. I cannot guarantee success it is a high try and error area and I cannot test them. Sure you will get some type error messages but I hope there will be a construction that will fit. If you can get the field value in a Alpha Five variable then you must take the next step and create a date and time value from it.

              Code:

              Dim NanoInt as B
              NanoInt.resize(64)
              NanoInt = x.tickfield
              Or

              Code:

              Declarestruct B64BIGINT
              Dim NanoInt as {BIGINT}
              NanoInt = x.tickfield
              Or

              Code:

              TYPE BIGINT
                         LOW as Integer '[URL="http://www.cs.umass.edu/~verts/cs32/endian.html"]Big Endian or Little Endian[/URL]
                         HIGH as Integer
              END TYPE

              Dim NanoInt as {BIGINT}
              NanoInt = x.tickfield
              Or

              Code:

              TYPE BIGINT
                         Member[2] as Integer
              END TYPE

              Dim NanoInt as {BIGINT}
              NanoInt = x.tickfield
              And at last try:

              Code:

              Dim NanoInt as A
              NanoInt = x.tickfield
              Maybe Xbasic translates this "Any" variable into a blob when you assign it a value from the table.field.

              Just some guesses.
