Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Xbasic code changes Textboxes to non-updateable, but not other control types

I have 18 columns in a V8 Updateable Grid (“testGrid”). Each Field is marked “Updateable” in the Field section of the Grid Builder. In a test A5W page that displays the grid, I’ve added the following code in hopes of making ALL fields read-only (not updateable):

    Code:
    with tmpl_testGrid
        componentName = "testGrid"
        dim i as N
        ' make all read-only
        for i = 1 to 18
            with field_info[i]
                updateable = .f.
            end with
        next
    end with
Some of the fields are TextBoxes, and indeed they show up as read-only (can’t be modified) in Live Preview. The rest of the fields are Checkboxes, Lookup fields, or Date Picker fields. These fields DON’T appear as read-only (i.e., you can change them).

How do I get these non-TextBox fields to show as read-only?

    Thanks,

    Al Mecklenburg

I didn't mean "Lookup" fields in my original post, I meant "Drop Down Boxes."

But since then I have seen this problem even when just setting Updateable in the Grid Builder (no Xbasic involved) for these types of controls, so I'm making another post suggesting this is a bug.

Bug? Updateable does not work for Grid controls Checkbox, Drop Down List, and Date

Unchecking the "Updateable" box in the "Update Settings" section of the Grid Builder (for an Updateable grid) does not work for these controls: CheckBox, Drop Down List, and Date Picker. They still seem to allow changing their associated field. TextBoxes and TextAreas, however, appear as uneditable when Updateable is not checked, as you would expect.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Re: Bug? Updateable does not work for Grid controls Checkbox, Drop Down List, and Dat

Today I leanred how to submit a bug report (it's in the Help menu). I got a reply back within about 15 minutes, and it did an excellent job of answering my question. Here is the reply:

Alpha Five is limited by what Browsers support and by the HTML standard.
If you mark a checkbox, dropdown etc as not updateable, they are indeed not updateable.
If you make a change in the browser and hit submit, you will see that the changes you thought you were making to the values in these fields are NOT saved to the database.

The reason that you can't type into a textbox or textarea is that html supports a 'readonly' tag for these controls.

There is not html support for readonly listboxes, checkboxes, etc.

I submitted a bug report and got a prompt answer, here it is:
