Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    form link wont work

i have tried everything, but my form link will not work.

form 1 has a button with an action script to open form 2 and to display a record from the same table as form 1, using the caseid field as a link.

when the button is pressed it will open form 2 at the first record in the table not the desired record. i have this working on other forms no problem.

i have tried every possible option availble using action scripting.

any ideas and if possible an explanation as to why this might be happening

    thanks

Would be much easier to look at a sample of what you have and make something work than to diagnose this by guesswork.

      user name - administrator
      password - manager

open form frmhomecontact (located near the end of the forms list), select client surname 'harris' and click 'continue to case overview'

in case overview, click the button 'fact find'. this is the button in question. this will open the clients screen but will show the first client 'pers pedersen' not the selected client 'harris'

      all data is test data.

      cheers

I've done a little digging and I can see that the value shown in caseref after performing your steps should be 2647 and displays as 2647 but if you switch to design mode at that point and open the object explorer, the value shown there is 2442. Thus you get shown the info for 2442 on the subsequent form.

Have to stop for a while but will get back to it later or in the morning.

I haven't found out why but somewhere along the line a query is being applied

          recno() = 1

and that is causing the further filter for the caseref to not work correctly. The query is applied when the Case Overview form is opened.

          I think.

            Thanks Stan,

ill have a go at trying to fix this. one thing has just come to mind, i dont have any records numbered 1 unless this means the first record.

someone did email me suggesting that i refresh the indexes, so ill also give that a go.

ill post back how i get on.

Correct. Alpha maintains a "record number" internally.

                so far...

i have refreshed the indexes, packed the table. added a new button to form 1 with just one simple action script telling alpha to open form 2 filtered on the caseref field.

i have tried opening another form in the same set, i have tried opening form 2 from a different from (frmhomecontact)

but nothing changes. im not sure where this filter is being applied.

                any ideas??????????

Problem is somewhere in your form "fFClient" "OnInit" events. I delete all of the events and all works OK then.

It sure seemed like nothing in the OnInit event would be a problem but Jack is correct.

Take the two "Set Value property of fields" from your OnInit event and place them on the OnActivate event and it works. (OnInit and OnFetch events do not)

Mike, this sounds like what I've seen before. OnInit is a slender reed. I rarely use it except for the simplest, shortest scripts. A useful strategy often is to open the form from a button and have the button load the form but keep it hidden. Then have the same script populate necessary fields, set indexes, move the record pointer, etc. Once all the work has been done, show the form to the user.

                        Tom,

Yes--even in my limited experience the OnInit event is very touchy especially when "pre-entering" field values.

But what to do when you only want to have the info/values placed or entered but the ONE time which the OnInit event is so nice for? My solution in the one case where I needed this to be so was to create a logical field that is set to True with the button's OnPush event, and then on the OnActivate event of the form that was called use this as a condition to run the value setting script(s) and then setting the logical field to False so that it would not run again unless the form was closed and reopened (my own little OnInint event if you will).

                          Thank you all very much.

i moved the code from oninit to onactivate and the desired results are achieved.

this demonstrates the great help this message board is, as id never have considered this and couldnt find anything in the help files.

                          thanks again.

It really demonstrates the teamwork here as well--Stan narrowed the problem down a lot, Jack narrowed it even more, and I just went a tiny bit further to find the exact cause (after most of the work was already done I might add!!). And then Tom comes and adds a bit of an explanation and an additional way to do similar. As a result, a solution was found without any one person spending a ton of time on it which really makes it nice for those with limited time---any one person does NOT have to see things to the end and so can contribute what they can, when they can....always seems someone picks up the ball when it is left laying for too long around here! :)

mike, i have another form which will require quite a bit of value setting when opened.

if i understand you correct, i should look at

                              1. load the form in hidden mode
                              2. execute all of the commands i need (set values) (can this be done from a button on a different form?)
                              3. make the form visible.

                              thanks
