Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Neat pseudo-collapsible navigation menu in V8:

I was trying to achieve the behavior in Outlook's Navigation Pane. It flickers a bit when changing menus.

You're showing us, but not telling us how you did it.

          Re: pseudo-collapsible navigation menu

The menu is a normal docked toolbar. The options to open another menu are just simple xbasic that closes the current menu and opens the new one, like this:

          ui_modeless_dlg_close("NavMain")
          a5_toolbar_open("NavReports",.t.)

Where NavReports is just another docked toolbar. Trick is you have to ensure each menu is exactly the same width or the rest of the page will shift right-left.

As I said, this method still causes some screen flicker during the transition. Selwyn offered some advice on using Conditional areas to remove all flicker. But that takes building the toolbar outside of the custom tool Alpha has for building toolbars and puts you in to creating an xdialog. So, not sure where I will head.

            Steve,

I watched it a few times and did NOT see any flicker...but as you stated, any variation in size is noticeable and I do see small differences between your toolbar sizes---maybe that is what you are referring to as a "flicker"?

            (nice BTW!)

Edit--maybe on the last toolbar shown--the yellow one--it seems to load itself to the right of the other toolbars (about 2 inches over) and then go to where it is supposed to (just a faint image).

              steve,

i have two toolbars and they have the same width and yet, the form shifts to the right during transition to another. can you post an example?

BTW, how to change the color of the button while mouse pointer on top?

              thanks

oh, is it possible to overlap a toolbar? i mean one toolbar on top of the other..

That shift to the right is the flicker I am talking about. I'm on a very fast computer*, so I suspect it would be more noticable for others. The color is just because I selected a color on the 2nd tab of the toolbar builder. I could not find any way to overlap toolbars, even if the first was hidden. They always docked to the left of any existing toolbar, even if hidden. I found it hard to control toolbar width. None of the xdialog commands seemed to be accurate, I had to place text on all pages that dictated the width (that's the only reason each menu has "Close All Windows" on each toolbar; it sets the maximum width.

                  Steve,

                  Very nice work.

I thought you might also be interested in another way to create a collapsible navigation menu as described in my posting "Open form executes for OnPush event for button, but errors on DblClick for tree".

It has some work to go, but brings some big league type functionality to an Alpha Five application.
