Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Hi: I'm a newbie! Please help.

    I'm new.

    I just purchased Alpha 5 ver 8.

To someone new any database can be intimidating. Does this program come with an already done, generic video/move database. I would like to use it to keep track of my video DVD collection.

Does one already exist -- can anyone steer me to it?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Re: Hi: I'm a newbie! Please help.

Welcome to Alpha Five Version 8

There are sample database templates in Alpha Five. I don't know that there is one for CD/DVD's. But try this

    Open a new database

In the Tables tab click on whitespace

That will bring up a menu - select "Create a new Table using Genie"

That will bring up the templates that are available for your use. Maybe one of those templates will be close enough for you to use and modify for your needs.

If you have any questions, the forum is here to help, but before you come to the forum - read the help files on using Alpha Five. It will give you a good start. You can also search the forum for answers to your questions from other posts.

You can do what you want to do (keeping track of Video DVD collection) - Just take some time to get acquainted with Alpha.

Look at the Alpha Sports app. You can learn a lot from looking at that full app in Alpha (It is in the sample database folder.

            Bob,
I believe Tom wants to keep track of his videos.

            Tom,
What did you have in mind, i.e. what features whould you be looking for? A simple cataloguing system should be quite easy to set up. By the way, you might consider having your profile allow persons to send you emails, which you now do not have active. It would allow someone to contact you directly if they had an application already built without having to announce it on this message board, if they wished to not have full public disclosure.

Good tip -- I turned it on.

It would be a simple database for DVD video's.

              Title
              Genre
              ID # (on inner ring of DVD). i.e. #1, 2, 3a;3b;3c, 4, 5 etc.

The a b & c would be for multi discs of same show or series.

              Something like that.

I guess I'm going in the right direction.

Why reinvent the wheel. A free move database can be found at www.movieorganizer.com

Do you think it's an overkill using Alpha 5 v8 for a movie database?

Its not overkill to want to build your own database for your collection and at the same time learn more about Alpha Five.

Alpha can do everything that you would need.

Someone told me Alpha 5 v8 is powerful enough to run a small country.

                      Is that true?

I don't know if I would want to run a small country.

I can tell you this it is presently running almost every aspect of this small company and I am sure there are applications out there running for some of the bigger companies.

                        We'll let countries alone.:)

I guess that would be possible, but it's real strength is people like you wanting to have their own db for their own use.

Funny thing is, once you build that one, you find another reason, then a friend asks for one, then a company sees your work somehow and asks for a small db, then......

You can always revel in the fact that you can change yours with the times/desires and as knowledge grows, you tackle more and more. Maybe even a small country or 2.
